Superman‘s world is filled with a rich cast of supporting characters – heroes, villains, friends, and family – who help bring his stories to life. But among them, Bizarro stands out. First appearing in 1958, this character is essentially a twisted, opposite version of Superman. Though he hasn’t always been a major player in DC Comics, Bizarro always makes for a compelling story, often as a villain who evokes sympathy from fans.
Bizarro is a consistently compelling character, and fans often wish he appeared in more stories. Since that’s not always the case, we’ve collected and ranked the most memorable Bizarro comic book moments to enjoy.
5) “The Battle With Bizarro” and “The Bride of Bizarro” (Action Comics #254-255)

Some of the most memorable Bizarro stories originated in the Silver Age of comics, particularly a two-part story called “The Battle With Bizarro” and “The Bride of Bizarro” from Action Comics #254 and #255 (1959). The story begins with Lex Luthor learning about Bizarro Superboy, created by Professor Dalton, and deciding he wants his own Bizarro version of Superman to torment the hero. Through deception, Luthor manages to create a duplicate of Superman, but surprisingly, Bizarro isn’t the villain Luthor expected. Instead, Bizarro assists Superman in thwarting Luthor’s plans. However, being a hero proves difficult for Bizarro because of his frightening appearance, and things go wrong when a disheartened Bizarro misinterprets a compliment from Lois Lane.
Thinking Lois loves him, a character kidnaps her hoping to marry her. When she rejects him, he – surprisingly intelligent – comes up with a bizarre scheme to win her over. Ultimately, Lois comes up with the solution: creating a female duplicate of himself for him to fall in love with. The two Bizarros hit it off, and everyone is happy… except for the real Lois, who playfully asks Superman when he plans to propose, a question he skillfully avoids answering.
4) “The Mirror, Crack’d” (Man of Steel #5)

The comic book event Crisis on Infinite Earths revamped the backstories of many DC characters, including Bizarro, though his new origin wasn’t drastically different. Later, in Man of Steel #5, Lex Luthor attempts to clone Superman, but the process goes wrong, resulting in a flawed copy he wants to eliminate. This imperfect clone, Bizarro, survives but is unintelligent, can’t speak, and has fragmented recollections of Clark Kent and Superman’s life. Driven to imitate Superman, Bizarro even resorts to kidnapping Lois Lane.
This story offers a surprising idea: Bizarro might actually be a hero. Throughout the narrative, using his powers causes him to fall apart, and he’s eventually destroyed when he fights Superman, dissolving into dust. However, that dust heals Lucy Lane, who was blind, hinting that Bizarro intentionally sacrificed himself to save her.
3) “The Kookie Super-Ape” (Adventure Comics #295)

Although Bizarro and Bizarro Lois left Earth to be with each other, they haven’t disappeared completely. They live on Htrae, a cube-shaped planet introduced in Adventure Comics #295, and it’s populated by many other Bizarros. Bizarro has essentially created a whole world of duplicates! In the story “The Kookie Super-Ape,” Bizarro Lois becomes the women’s wrestling champion, but after losing to Bizarro Lana, she faces exile to Earth if she can’t find someone to defeat her within 30 days. To prevent this, Bizarro creates Bizarro Titano, also known as “Big Ape,” to challenge her.
This story is wonderfully strange and, while not the most intense, it’s always fun to see Bizarro create a copy of Titano. The way the story ends with Bizarro Lois winning is especially amusing.
2) “Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow” (Superman #423)

The story takes a surprisingly sad turn for Bizarro. When Superman returns from space, he discovers Metropolis has been wrecked by Bizarro. During their confrontation, Bizarro explains he understood he wasn’t a true, flawed copy of Superman. In a desperate attempt to fix this, he mistakenly destroyed Bizarro World, mirroring the destruction of Krypton.
In the end, Bizarro understands that Superman must survive, and therefore he must sacrifice himself. He says goodbye to Superman and then uses blue kryptonite to end his own life. It’s a deeply moving, though unusual, scene. While it feels somewhat convenient for the story to eliminate Bizarro, it’s a powerfully written moment and remains a classic, even though it means Bizarro is gone—at least for the time being.
1) “Bizarro Meets Frankenstein” (Superman #143)

Since the character of Bizarro was inspired by Frankenstein, it’s fitting that the top story on our list is Superman #143, “Bizarro Meets Frankenstein.” In this story, Bizarro and his family on Bizarro World enjoy watching Earth television, especially horror movies – they find them hilarious! Bizarro prides himself on being the ultimate monster, but he’s taken down a peg when he sees an ad for a movie about Frankenstein’s Monster. Determined to prove he’s still the best, Bizarro travels to Earth to challenge him.
The cartoon gets pretty chaotic quickly, as Bizarro attacks the actor playing Frankenstein’s Monster in the movie they’re filming. He tries to be intimidating, but just ends up being funny, which makes him furious and leads to him destroying the set. Superman cleverly uses static electricity to trick Bizarro into thinking he’s scared everyone, and a cheerful Bizarro returns home with a puppet of the one thing he finds truly frightening – a Superman puppet – for his children. It’s a wild Bizarro story, but the connection to Frankenstein’s Monster is inspired, making it our favorite.
