Hollywood has always been great at bringing classic horror thrills to life with monster movies. Films like Jaws famously made people afraid to go near the ocean. In the 1980s, most movie monsters came from outer space, like in Critters and The Thing. But by the 1990s, filmmakers started looking for scary creatures right here on Earth. We saw dinosaurs come back to life in Jurassic Park, and a small town was terrorized by giant spiders in Arachnophobia.
I’ve been diving deep into horror lately, and I stumbled upon this ’90s movie that’s seriously underrated. It really blew my mind with something totally new at the time! It got me thinking – we’ve explored so little of the ocean, so many creatures remain unknown. But what about the land? You’d think we’d know what’s under our feet by now, wouldn’t you? It’s a creepy thought.
The 1990 monster movie Tremors, starring Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward, has become a beloved cult classic and launched a successful series of home video releases. It remains a fantastic monster film that only gets better with time, thanks to its incredible creature effects created by Amalgamated Dynamics. Tremors is a prime example of truly impressive practical filmmaking.
This movie is a classic of its kind, and critics still love it years after it came out. It currently has an 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and is considered ‘Certified Fresh,’ meaning viewers are also enjoying it and praising its perfect mix of scares and laughs. The creatures in the film, called Graboids, are now popular on streaming services and are attracting a lot of attention.
Nothing Bad Should Have Happened in Perfection, Right?
Val and Earl, a pair of handymen, are desperate to escape the dying town of Perfection, Nevada. They feel like the town has nothing left to offer and want to find better opportunities somewhere else. Just as they’re about to leave, however, something unexpected rises from the desert floor.
Suddenly, people and large items started vanishing in the night. Partnering with Rhonda LeBeck, a seismology student, Val and Earl discovered the danger was far stranger than they thought: massive, worm-like creatures were burrowing beneath the surface, devouring anything that moved, and their appetite seemed insatiable.
Tremors isn’t a complex monster movie with a lot of twists and turns. It’s a pretty straightforward story about people trapped in a town, and that’s all there is to it. While similar ideas felt silly in films like Maximum Overdrive, here it works because the characters are well-developed and interesting. Though often called a horror comedy, and featuring some funny characters, the movie knows when to be serious – and that’s thanks to those strong characterizations.
Honestly, Michael Gross and Reba McEntire as Burt and Heather Gummer really make this movie. Burt, especially, was such a cool character in the first film, and I was always thrilled to see him pop up in the sequels, figuring out new ways to take down those Graboids. His scenes are consistently some of the most fun and memorable parts of the whole series, in my opinion.
‘Tremors’ Was Saved by the Video Rental Movement of the ’90s

When Tremors first came out in theaters, it wasn’t a big hit. It made just over $16 million at the box office, even though it cost around $11 million to make, and disappeared from cinemas quickly. This might have been because Universal released it in January, which is generally considered a slow month for movie releases.
I remember when Tremors first hit home video, and it was a game changer. It really found its audience there, building a devoted cult following that’s still going strong. Now, seeing it at No. 4 on AMC+? Sure, a little nostalgia probably plays a part. But honestly, this ’90s gem remains one of the best creature features ever made, and it absolutely holds up even after 36 years. It’s a classic that deserves a rewatch.
