Many movie franchises have successfully returned to the big screen, and the recent Jumanji films are prime examples. Despite competing with two films from the popular Star Wars sequels, the two Jumanji movies released in the late 2010s were huge successes, earning nearly $962.5 million and $801.6 million worldwide. The popular cast – Dwayne Johnson, Karen Gillan, Kevin Hart, and Jack Black – are back for a third movie, which is now one step closer to its release date as filming has finished.
Dwayne Johnson announced on Instagram that filming for the next Jumanji movie (currently without a title) is finished. He shared photos from the set and talked about how much he’s enjoyed working on the Jumanji films with his fellow cast and crew. Johnson also paid tribute to Robin Williams, who starred in the original Jumanji movie from the 1990s. You can see his full post below.
Can Jumanji 3 End the Modern Series on a High Note?
The first two Jumanji movies starring Dwayne Johnson were generally well-received. Welcome to the Jungle from 2017 currently has a 77% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and The Next Level isn’t far behind at 72%. Both films are fun, crowd-pleasing adventures that capture the feel of the original Jumanji starring Robin Williams, even if they don’t break new ground. Now, with director Jake Kasdan returning for the next movie, fans are hoping he can end this Jumanji series with a strong finale. He’s successfully made two exciting and humorous adventure films already, so he seems like the perfect person for the job.
Beyond a brief glimpse of the Jumanji game affecting reality, details about the plot are still a secret. However, Dwayne Johnson has repeatedly stated that this will be the last Jumanji movie with the current cast. Because of this, the filmmakers aimed to create something truly memorable – a satisfying conclusion that celebrates the lasting impact of the Jumanji franchise. While it’s unclear what the future holds for Jumanji after this film, the team wants to give these characters a great send-off. Everyone involved understands how much Jumanji means to fans and is dedicated to making this final movie the best it can be, so the quality should be excellent.
The main concern is whether the new Jumanji movie will be as financially successful as the previous ones. The holiday season is always a busy time for cinemas, and this year will be particularly competitive with Dune: Part Three and Avengers: Doomsday both expected to draw large crowds. Jumanji 3 will be competing directly with these films, and while Sony has tried to boost its chances by releasing it on Christmas Day, it will still be a challenge to get noticed alongside two major blockbusters.
It would be disappointing if the new Jumanji movie didn’t perform well in theaters, especially since it’s intended as a celebratory continuation of the series. While fans who’ve enjoyed the previous films will likely have a good time, strong box office numbers would make the release even more successful. Some believe Sony might benefit from delaying the film’s release, but the studio currently plans to release it during the Christmas season. Hopefully, positive reviews and audience reactions will help it compete with other popular movies released at the same time.
