Crystal Dynamics, the studio behind the Tomb Raider series, is reportedly developing a new video game based on The Lord of the Rings. The game, which is being developed for Embracer Group, is expected to be similar to Hogwarts Legacy.
Insider Gaming is reporting that Crystal Dynamics is developing the game with help from other studios. They also state the project has secured $100 million in funding from the Abu Dhabi Investment Office.
The upcoming Lord of the Rings game has been in the works for a while, but according to sources at Insider Gaming, it’s not expected to come out for some time yet.
Although Crystal Dynamics recently announced new Tomb Raider projects – including Tomb Raider Catalyst and a remake of the original Legacy of Atlantis – the studio has faced difficulties lately. After Microsoft cancelled Perfect Dark, a game Crystal Dynamics was assisting with, the developer has had to reduce its workforce several times.
It’s remarkable that the studio is simultaneously developing two Tomb Raider games and a Lord of the Rings game.
Just like it took a long time for a truly great Harry Potter game to arrive with Hogwarts Legacy, the world of The Lord of the Rings hasn’t had many excellent game adaptations. While there were games based on the movies for the PlayStation 2 that some people enjoy, and more recently The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, the series is mostly known for the two Middle-earth games released on the last generation of consoles.
