Okay, horror fans, get ready! I’m hearing from Paramount that Scream 8 is officially happening. This news comes on the heels of the last film absolutely crushing it at the box office – it broke records and was the first in the series to make over $200 million, even with all the chatter and controversy surrounding it. It’s good news for Ghostface fans, to say the least!
Lilla and Nora Zuckerman are working on the next installment of the series through Spyglass. While their recent Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot was canceled by Hulu, they previously showran the popular (but also canceled after two seasons) Peacock series Poker Face. They’ve also written for and co-executive produced several well-known shows, including Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Suits, Fringe, and Prodigal Son.
Scream 7’s Future Was Teased Before
At the premiere of Scream 7, director and original screenwriter Kevin Williamson revealed he’s already thought about a potential Scream 8. “When you’re working late on set, you naturally start brainstorming ideas for what could happen next,” he said.
He explained that Neve came up with a fantastic idea that everyone quickly embraced. He added that if the movie is successful and audiences enjoy it, they’re open to continuing the series for the fans. Basically, if there’s demand, they’ll definitely consider making more.
Scream 7 Broke Franchise Records
The latest installment, Scream 7, has sparked a lot of debate. The Scream franchise was revitalized in 2022 by directors Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin (known as Radio Silence). The film brought back original stars like Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, and David Arquette, but also introduced new leads Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera, who played sisters Tara and Sam Carpenter.
The recent Scream films successfully brought the franchise back to life by blending new ideas with a tribute to the original 1996 movie. Both films did very well with audiences, and stars Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera were set to return for a seventh installment. However, before filming began, Spyglass fired Barrera due to her views on Palestine, alleging antisemitism. Following this, Ortega and director Christopher Landon also left the project.
After losing its original stars, the Spyglass franchise returned to focusing on its core characters. Neve Campbell disagreed with the studio over salary, which led to her not appearing in Scream VI. However, the latest film brought Sidney Prescott back into the story, with a new Ghostface targeting her now-teenage daughter, Tatum.
