The first movie adaptation of Brandon Sanderson’s popular Mistborn novels is making significant progress at Apple TV.
Apple and author Brandon Sanderson recently teamed up to bring Sanderson’s Cosmere universe—including the popular Mistborn series—to the screen. Sanderson himself will be writing the screenplay for the first movie.
Brandon Sanderson recently shared a significant update on the development of the Mistborn adaptation. In a new YouTube video, he revealed that he’s finished about half of the first draft of the script.
He said he was making good progress on the project and had received positive feedback from Apple TV executives about their expectations. While the studio heads haven’t read the script yet, he’s optimistic about how things are developing.
I’m halfway through the screenplay for Misborn and making good progress. I’ve had productive conversations with Apple, the studio, about their expectations for the project. They haven’t had a chance to read it yet, but I’m optimistic about how it’s shaping up.
Brandon Sanderson is a highly successful author who has published many books since his debut novel, Elantris, in 2005. He quickly followed that with the Mistborn series, starting with The Final Empire in 2006, and completed the original trilogy with The Well of Ascension and The Hero of Ages.
Sanderson followed up the first Mistborn books with a second era consisting of The Hero of Ages, Shadows of Self, The Bands of Mourning, and The Lost Metal. He intends to write a third era of Mistborn at some point in the future.
As a fantasy fan, I’m really excited about the Mistborn series. It follows this incredible crew of thieves who team up and use a magical system called Allomancy to try and overthrow an empire that’s been in power for a thousand years. It’s a really cool concept!
Similar to how Stephen King links many of his novels through a shared universe, Brandon Sanderson has created a connected world called the Cosmere. Several of his published series and novels, including Mistborn, Elantris, The Stormlight Archive, White Sand, and The Sunlit Man, are all set within this expansive universe.
Apple is currently exploring adaptations of both the Mistborn series and The Stormlight Archive, with plans to develop the latter as a television show.
As a huge fan, I’ve been following the attempts to bring Brandon Sanderson’s Mistborn to life for years! It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster – two different companies have tried to make it happen over the last 16 years, but unfortunately, both times the projects stalled. Brandon actually shared in 2023 that pre-production had been put on hold, which was really disappointing to hear.
More than two years after initial discussions, Apple and Brandon Sanderson revealed a comprehensive agreement to bring Sanderson’s Cosmere universe to life. It’s currently unknown whether the Mistborn script Sanderson began developing in 2020 with DMG Entertainment is the same one he’s working on now, or if he’s started a new script from the beginning.
Brandon Sanderson is familiar with adapting fantasy novels for the screen. He previously worked as a consultant on Prime Video’s The Wheel of Time, a show based on Robert Jordan’s books that ran for three seasons. Notably, Sanderson actually finished the book series himself, writing the final three volumes after Jordan’s death in 2007.
Brandon Sanderson is collaborating with a streaming service again, this time to adapt one of his own novels. While development of the Mistborn series is just beginning, Sanderson recently shared that his work with Apple is going well.
