A Nintendo Switch game released in 2019 has unexpectedly been removed from the eShop. 2019 was a particularly strong year for the Switch, with popular titles like Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Luigi’s Mansion 3, Pokémon Sword and Shield, Super Mario Maker 2, and The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening all being released. Now, one game that originally launched exclusively for the Switch in late 2019 is no longer available for purchase on Nintendo’s digital store, and the reason why is currently unknown.
The game Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 is no longer available on the Nintendo eShop. Originally released in November 2019, the game came out nearly two years before the actual Tokyo Olympics, which were postponed to 2021 due to the pandemic. Sega and Nintendo haven’t publicly stated why they removed the game, but it’s probably because the license allowing them to use the Olympics branding has expired. Now that the license is no longer active, they can’t legally sell the game. This happens with licensed games fairly often, and while it’s frustrating for fans, it’s a common practice.
This Nintendo Series Seems to Be Dead

The removal of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 from sale strongly suggests the series is finished. Since the game’s release, three more Olympic Games have taken place – two Winter and one Summer – but no new Mario & Sonic game has been made. This indicates that at least one of the companies involved doesn’t want to continue the franchise, meaning Tokyo 2020 will likely be the last game in the series.
If you were disappointed to find Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 removed from the eShop, you can still buy a physical copy of the game. Right now, retailers like Amazon are actually selling it for a lower price than it was on the eShop. Although the price might go up later because the digital version is no longer available, you should still be able to purchase it easily.
