Kurt Sutter hasn’t completely dismissed the possibility of revisiting the world he created. Even though a planned prequel series was canceled and he left FX seven years ago, he says he still thinks about returning to that universe.
Kurt Sutter, the creator of SOA (along with John Linson), recently told Deadline that he’s not only repaired his relationship with FX Networks chairman John Landgraf, but it’s actually become even closer over the years.
I always had a good working relationship with John Landgraf, but we’ve actually become much closer since I moved on from the company, and that’s been really meaningful. I know how much he cares about the creative material, and I completely trust his judgment. When the time is right and everything aligns, we’ll move forward with things. Our conversations are usually about the bigger picture – we talk business and ideas over lunch, but it’s never focused on pushing one specific project.
As a huge fan of Sons of Anarchy, I was really excited about the prequel they were planning. It would have shown us how the club, SAMCRO, first got started, focusing on John Teller coming back from Vietnam and the early days. We’d have seen younger versions of Gemma and Clay, and how the club went from having good intentions to becoming the dangerous criminal organization we knew. It also promised to finally reveal what really happened to John Teller and explore the meaning behind those journals that were so important to Jax. While Kurt Sutter isn’t actively working on bringing that specific show back right now, he’s definitely left the possibility open for more Sons of Anarchy stories in the future, which is great news for fans like me!
I definitely feel like there are more stories to explore, and I’d love to revisit this if the opportunity arises. While nothing is certain, I’m open to whatever the future holds and willing to adapt to new possibilities.
These comments come seven years after Kurt Sutter’s working relationship with Disney fell apart in 2019. This followed Disney’s purchase of FX, which led to Sutter being fired from his show, Mayans M.C., during its second season. Sources said Disney executives didn’t approve of Sutter’s approach to leading the show and felt his scripts were too intense and edgy for the direction Disney was heading.
I was really shocked to hear Kurt Sutter got fired – apparently, there were issues with his behavior and some of the creative decisions he was making. It seemed like that meant we’d never get any more Sons of Anarchy, especially since he and FX had worked together for so long. But now, the creator is hinting that a prequel or another spin-off could happen eventually, which is amazing news for a fan like me!
Kurt Sutter and Stephen Sagal are working together again on Khorus Harmonia, a unique choral concert created by Sagal and staged by Sutter. This project offers a new creative outlet for the pair while they still consider the possibility of revisiting Sons of Anarchy. Sutter is also developing a noir drama for MGM+ set in 1950s Hollywood, and co-created Nomad, an Apple TV+ series starring Jason Momoa about an outlaw biker gang. This demonstrates that the energy of Sons of Anarchy continues, as fans hope for a prequel to the original show.
