Roger Ebert Approved Sci-Fi Thriller Cult Classic ‘Moon’ Streaming on Hulu in April 2026

Many brilliant sci-fi movies don’t get the recognition they deserve right away, but often become beloved classics over time. Films like Akira, They Live, Galaxy Quest, and Repo Man all built followings after their initial release, and the show Firefly was sadly cancelled before it could truly shine. In 2009, a fantastic sci-fi thriller starring Sam Rockwell came out, and it’s flown under the radar for too long. Luckily, it’s finally becoming available on streaming, giving it a chance to reach a wider audience.

Starting April 1st, you’ll be able to stream the film Moon on Hulu. It will likely be available for a year – plenty of time to watch it multiple times (and make your friends do the same, because it’s fantastic!). Moon was directed by Duncan Jones and written with Nathan Parker. Surprisingly, this critically acclaimed film was made on a small $5 million budget and only earned around $10 million worldwide, barely breaking even.

You know, I was lucky enough to catch Moon in theaters when it came out, and it really stuck with me. It’s easily one of the best sci-fi thrillers of the 2010s. Sam Rockwell plays Sam Bell, a guy working on the moon who’s nearing the end of a long three-year stint. Just as he’s getting excited to go home to his wife and daughter, he starts feeling really sick. And things get weird – he starts seeing another version of himself, a younger clone, running around the station. It’s a film that really messes with your head, but it’s also surprisingly moving and personal. It totally deserves its cult classic status, honestly.

Though it wasn’t initially a box office hit, the film Moon has steadily gained a dedicated following over the past 17 years. It now boasts over 100,000 user reviews on Rotten Tomatoes – even more than some major blockbuster films – and holds an impressive 89% audience score, with many calling it one of the best independent science fiction movies ever made.

Reviews for the film Moon have been consistently positive. It’s now “Certified Fresh” with a 90% rating on review sites. Even the renowned Roger Ebert was deeply impressed, giving it three and a half stars. He compared the film’s atmosphere to the classic 2001: A Space Odyssey, but also praised its originality.
