‘Absolute Disaster’: Batman & Robin Star on Why the 1997 Movie Failed

Almost three decades after “Batman & Robin,” directed by Joel Schumacher, failed to succeed with audiences and critics, actor Chris O’Donnell has discussed the reasons behind the movie’s poor reception. In a recent interview, he explained what went wrong with the George Clooney-starring film and shared a memorable story from the set.

Al Pacino, while recently on a podcast, explained that the movie Batman Forever didn’t do well mostly because of two key issues.

Chris O’Donnell explained that Warner Bros. was eager to make another Batman film after the success of 1995’s Batman Forever. He shared on the I’ve Never Said This Before podcast with Tommy DiDario that the studio rushed into a sequel, deviating from their usual three-year gap between films. The first movie had been so popular, they immediately wanted to capitalize on that success with another one.

Warner Bros.’ attempt to follow the production process used for the 1993 film The Fugitive appears to have been a mistake.

O’Donnell described how the film The Fugitive overcame major production problems with enough funding and problem-solving to become a huge success. They essentially started filming, hoping to work things out as they went. In contrast, Batman & Robin ended up being overly silly and disorganized, which deeply upset director Joel Schumacher.

The Golden Globe-nominated actor shared that even though he filmed several scenes with Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Mr. Freeze in Batman & Robin, they never actually filmed those scenes together at the same time.

I never shared a scene directly with Arnold on camera. They used a body double who was incredibly convincing – you really couldn’t tell the difference! It’s funny, but Arnold mostly just did the close-up shots himself, according to O’Donnell.
