More details are emerging about the recent layoffs at Eidos Montreal, including information about the projects the studio was working on before the cuts were made.
Insider Gaming reports that a Canadian game studio worked on a large project for over seven years before it was recently cancelled.
The game, internally known as P11, became a major financial issue for the company, reportedly costing hundreds of millions of dollars. This diverted resources from other projects, including the already announced Deus Ex game, which were ultimately cancelled.
P11 was planned to be an open-world action adventure game where players would control a teenage character named River. River was a member of the Spiritbounds, a group with magical abilities. Players would be able to quickly travel around the game world by riding on large creatures.
Insider Gaming reports that sources indicate the game, codenamed P11, was nearly finished – it had reached the debugging stage, and Eidos Montreal was aiming for a potential release in late 2026.
This report clearly shows the developer is in a difficult situation. The studio has faced challenges since being sold by Square Enix to Embracer Group in 2022, and this report likely explains the reasons behind those struggles.
Given how difficult development clearly was, people are questioning whether Eidos Montreal should have continued with the project, known as P11. It reportedly went through four different game engines during development, and there were disagreements about the story’s direction.
It’s particularly devastating that the cancellation happened so close to completion, leading to the loss of jobs for 124 employees at the studio.
