Invincible Makes Major Change to Classic Comic Book Character

Season four of Invincible is in full swing, with Mark Grayson facing off against new villains and the immense danger of the Viltrumite Empire. The Amazon Prime Video show recently surprised fans with a storyline completely new to the original comic books, and now it’s done so again. This time, a key character involved in the upcoming Viltrumite War – Tech Jacket – has been significantly altered from his comic book version as the heroes prepare to battle Thragg and his alien invaders.

Spoiler Alert: If you haven’t seen the fifth episode of Invincible Season Four, be warned – this contains spoilers! Tech Jacket first appeared in Image Comics back in 2002, even before Mark Grayson was introduced. Though not as well-known as Omni-Man’s son, creator Robert Kirkman later added Tech Jacket to the Invincible comic series, establishing him as a powerful ally in the fight against the Viltrumites. The recent episode of the animated show revealed a significant change: Tech Jacket is now “Zoey Thompson” instead of “Zack Thompson,” meaning the character has been gender-swapped. You can see a picture of the new version of the hero below.

The New Tech Jacket

The latest episode of Invincible, titled “Give Us a Moment,” is one of the most intense yet, and it features a surprising twist with the character Tech Jacket. While Zoey proves to be a strong teammate in the fight against the Viltrum Empire, she isn’t quite powerful enough to defeat all of their enemies. The episode brings back Conquest, setting up a long-awaited rematch from the end of season three. True to Invincible‘s style, the fight quickly becomes incredibly violent, showcasing just how far Mark will go to defend his loved ones and the world. This episode is particularly graphic, so viewers should be prepared for a very bloody and shocking conclusion.

After the first battle with the Viltrumites, Zoey—the new Tech Jacket—finds safety with Allen the Alien aboard one of his ships. She uses her high-tech suit to camouflage herself and Allen on the ship. Despite being a different gender than the original Tech Jacket (Zack), she possesses the same powers and abilities. You can expect this new version of Tech Jacket to be a key player in the story going forward.

For those interested in exploring Tech Jacket’s origins further, Robert Kirkman created several comic book series featuring the armored hero. Similar to The Amazing Wolfman, many stories from the comics weren’t adapted for the screen. Though the original Invincible comic concluded in 2018, the universe continues with the new series, Battle Beast, from writer Robert Kirkman and artist Ryan Ottley. Overall, it’s an exciting time to be a fan of Invincible, whether you enjoy the show or the comics.
