Excitement for the new movie is incredibly high. The cast bringing beloved Nintendo characters to life is impressive, and everyone is especially eager to see how Yoshi is portrayed.
The popular dinosaur character wasn’t in the first Super Mario Bros. Movie, appearing only as an egg at the end. But in the new movie, he could be a breakout star, and Donald Glover thinks that’s likely.
Donald Glover, the talented actor and musician providing the voice for Yoshi, is known for his incredible performances. He’s a highly respected actor, having won two Emmy Awards and two Golden Globes, and is also a celebrated musician with five Grammy Awards among his more than 50 awards total.
Donald Glover + Yoshi = Oscar?
Might he win the ultimate honor for his portrayal of Yoshi?
Glover jokingly predicted he might receive an Oscar nomination, telling Reuters he’s delivered a performance with a similar range to that of Daniel Day-Lewis. He added that it would be unusual if he didn’t get recognized for it.
While it might seem unlikely, Chris Pratt actually could be an Academy Award contender for his role in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. It would be a huge achievement to win an Oscar for a character who only says five different lines, including simply shouting his own name.
Yoshi Could Make or Break The Super Mario Galaxy Movie
Glover appreciates the challenge it presented, and feels he knocked it out of the park.
He felt good about his performance of the Yoshi sounds. He was really concentrating while recording, and he was relieved and happy that listeners didn’t immediately recognize his voice as Donald’s. He said the whole experience was a lot of fun.
He described the role as a welcome challenge, saying it pushed him creatively. He’d never felt so much pressure to deliver something truly memorable that fans would love, and he was happy with the experience.
The addition of Brie Larson as Rosalina and Issa Rae as the Honey Queen is exciting for the series, but Chris Pratt still carries the biggest responsibility and faces the most anticipation.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie arrives in theaters worldwide on April 1.
