Invincible Season 4’s Tech Jacket Change May Leave Viewers Split

Warning: This article Contains SPOILERS for Invincible season 4, episode 5, “Give Us a Moment.”

The fourth season of Invincible has started strong, with each episode introducing fresh developments. The season began with a three-episode arc where Mark and the Guardians faced multiple dangers on Earth. Meanwhile, Omni-Man shared some surprising vulnerabilities of the Viltrumites. The fourth episode of season four then sparked a lot of discussion – and some disagreement – among viewers.

Okay, episode 5 just dropped, and wow, it’s easily one of the most intense episodes we’ve seen so far. Beyond all the action, though, a really big shift happened with one of the characters. Tech Jacket has been a fan favorite in the comics – he even headlined his own series! – so expectations were high for his role in this Viltrumite War arc, and this episode definitely delivers… in a way many won’t see coming.

Fans have seen Tech Jacket before – he was a key player in season 3’s ‘Invincible War,’ single-handedly defeating a villainous version of Mark. While he seems destined to continue as a supporting hero, there are some changes from the comic book version that might not appeal to everyone.

Prime Video’s Tech Jacket Changes Are Bound To Divide Invincible Fans

Viewers familiar with the Tech Jacket comics might have been surprised by his introduction in season 4, as the TV show reimagines the character. The show’s version isn’t Zack Thompson, but a woman named Zoe, who carries on the spirit of the hero while also having some key differences.

Even with the gender change, Zoe feels more energetic and sociable than Zack, especially when she’s basking in the applause after winning against The Walking Dredd. Zack, while still a good person, seems more relaxed and doesn’t quite have the same self-assurance. Both characters are fundamentally positive and have strong morals, which is a big part of why people enjoy Tech Jacket so much.

We don’t know much about Zoe’s past yet, but it seems like it might be unique. She has a very strong and supportive relationship with her father, who guides her during competitions. Zack also has a close relationship with his father in the comics, though his father plays a different kind of role than a coach or mentor.

When Zack’s father is targeted in a robbery, Zack steps in to help, and that’s when he discovers what his suit can really do, just like in the original story. We haven’t had much time to get to know Zoe yet, so it’s not right to be too critical of her, especially since she’s already building a similar friendship with Allen as Zack does in the comics.

Because some changes to the Hell storyline in the Invincible comic weren’t well-received, it’s likely that altering a beloved character like Zoe will create some disagreement among fans, even though she has a lot of promise.

Tech Jacket Is Still Likable In Invincible’s TV Adaptation, But It’ll Take A Lot To Match The Comic Version

Since Zoe is now Tech Jacket and seems destined for a similar story arc as the comic book version, she has the potential to become a beloved character. However, surpassing Zack’s popularity will be a challenge. The original Tech Jacket benefited from a well-established history and was a classic underdog, making him particularly relatable.

Zack felt incredibly powerful defeating two powerful enemies and fighting Vilturmites, especially considering he was essentially just a human in amazing armor. Zoe shares some of those strengths, but her confidence might actually cause problems for her.

Luckily, Zoe still has a hopeful and endearing personality, which is why her decision to fight such strong opponents is so inspiring. Allen didn’t need to push her much at all. However, her generally positive outlook makes it especially worrying when she’s truly scared and struggling against some of the most powerful Viltrumites in Invincible.

Even though some viewers might be skeptical, Prime Video’s Invincible has proven it can enhance characters from the original comic books, and it’s not afraid to make changes, even to a character’s gender, to do so.

I’m hopeful Zoe can become a popular character like Zack, because she’s already likable and has a lot of potential, though the writers might need to put in extra effort to make it happen.

Why Invincible Season 4 May Have Tweaked Tech Jacket’s Character

Tech Jacket was a well-known character, so deciding to replace him in the show was a risky choice. There are a couple of reasons why the creators might have done this. One possibility is that they ran into copyright problems. Even though much of the Invincible world is connected, it can still be difficult to get the rights to use specific characters on television.

Brit appeared in the animated series later than anticipated, and the character originally known as Science Dog had to be renamed Seance Dog because of copyright issues. While Tech Jacket retained its original name, it seems odd that this naming conflict would be the reason for changing the character’s gender and personality, though it’s still a possibility.

The difference might also come down to how characters are portrayed. While it’s debatable which show does it better, Prime Video’s Invincible has definitely put more effort into developing its female characters. We’ve seen a more complex and detailed portrayal of Debbie, and the show has also explored Atom Eve’s background and story more fully.

The show clearly aims to appeal to a broad audience. Given that most of the heroes fighting in the Viltrumite War are male, and the Viltrumite Empire itself is largely made up of men, the creators likely decided to include at least one female character on the team to provide some balance.

Den of Geek reports that the decision to change Tech Jacket’s gender in the TV adaptation stemmed from Invincible creator Robert Kirkman’s concern that the character might be too similar to Mark Grayson. He believed a gender swap would help Tech Jacket feel more distinct.

Since season 4 of Invincible closely follows the original comic book, this small change won’t be a big deal overall. Whether Robert Kirkman has shared the complete story or not, the introduction of Tech Jacket is sure to be a popular topic of discussion for quite a while.

Tech Jacket Isn’t The Only Character Invincible Has Made Big Changes To

As a big fan of the Invincible comics, I’ve been really impressed with how closely the Prime Video show sticks to the original story. But it’s also made some changes here and there, and one that really stands out to me is what they did with Shrinking Rae. In the comics, he had a pretty brief role, but the show significantly expanded on his story and character.

In the comics, Shrinking Ray didn’t make it through the battle with the Lizard League, but the show gave her a second chance – she recovered and even developed a surprising romance with Rex, which helped both of them grow. The series also reimagined Amber’s personality, and although some viewers weren’t thrilled with the changes at first, her character improved throughout the first season.

Damien Darkblood will have a significantly expanded role in the animated series. While originally presented as a minor, comedic character, he’s become a compelling enigma in season four. The show is also making smaller changes, such as altering Green Ghost’s gender and exploring Donald’s feelings about becoming a cyborg, demonstrating that Invincible has always been willing to adapt its source material.

Considering the changes have been mostly successful, there’s no need to worry about Tech Jacket being a bit different in the upcoming season. While some fans might prefer the original Zack, Zoe deserves a chance to prove herself in season 4 of Invincible, and everything suggests she’ll do a great job with the character.
