The BBC has said that broadcaster Scott Mills was sacked after “new information” came to light.
The BBC announced on Wednesday that it was aware of a 2017 police investigation involving one of its Radio 2 breakfast show hosts. However, the BBC stated it took quick action after receiving new information recently, and ended the host’s contract on March 27th.
The BBC did not give details on the new information that led to the radio DJ’s sacking.
A BBC representative shared that Scott Mills had a successful and popular career with the BBC, and that many people were surprised and saddened to hear of his departure this week.
We’ve seen a lot of discussion in the news and online since Monday, and we want to explain that we’re limited in what we can share. This is because we need to protect the privacy and rights of everyone involved.
We recently received new information about Scott and had a direct conversation with him. Following this, the BBC took swift action, consistent with our principles, and ended his contracts on March 27th.
The BBC is dedicated to building a better workplace. After a thorough review of its internal culture last year, the BBC established clear standards of behavior for all staff and those working with the organization, and emphasized that there would be consequences for failing to meet those standards.

The spokesperson also stated that the BBC was informed in 2017 about a police investigation. That investigation concluded in 2019 without any arrests or charges. They are now looking into exactly what the BBC knew at the time.
Well, it’s official: Mills is out. News broke on Monday that he’s been let go after some serious accusations about his behavior outside of work. It’s a messy situation, to say the least, and clearly the organization felt they had no choice but to part ways with him.
Police later confirmed that Mills was questioned in 2018 regarding accusations of serious sexual offenses involving a boy under the age of 16.
The investigation, which started in 2016, looked into claims about events that allegedly happened between 1997 and 2000. It was closed in 2019 because investigators couldn’t find enough evidence.
TopMob has reached out to Mills for comment on the allegations.
In December 2016, the Metropolitan Police started an investigation after receiving a referral from another police force. The investigation involved allegations of serious sexual offenses against a young teenager, reportedly occurring between 1997 and 2000.
Police interviewed a man in his 40s under caution in July 2018 as part of their investigation.
Investigators sent a complete case file to prosecutors, but they decided there wasn’t enough evidence to file charges. Based on this advice, the investigation was closed in May 2019.
