The film Weapons was a huge success, earning nearly $270 million around the world. Amy Madigan recently received her first Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her critically acclaimed role as Aunt Gladys. While writer and director Zach Cregger is also working on a new Resident Evil movie, he’s continuing to develop plans for additional content based on Weapons as well.
Last September, director Daniel Cregger revealed plans for a prequel focusing on Madigan’s Aunt Gladys. Now, thanks to Deadline, we have official details about the Weapons prequel, including Cregger returning to direct. This time, however, he’ll be collaborating on the screenplay with writer Zach Shields, who has a strong background in the Monsterverse, having worked on films like Godzilla vs. Kong, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, and the series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.
Currently, we don’t know much about the story of the Weapons prequel, except that it will focus on Madigan’s character and reveal her backstory. The movie is currently titled Gladys. Director Zach Cregger seems to prefer short and simple titles – as seen with Weapons and Barbarian – and this film will follow that pattern. More information about the prequel will be released as the movie is developed.
This is a developing story with more details to follow.
