ARC Raiders Production Director Asserts That “Players Shouldn’t Feel Safe”

Embark Studios has really revamped ARC Raiders with the new Flashpoint update. A strong ARC presence combined with the game’s focus on unpredictable gameplay has created a genuinely tense and exciting experience – we were constantly on the edge of our seats!

Many players feel this way, and it seems intentional. According to production director Caio Braga, as he told GamesRadar+, the game was designed to create a constant sense of danger, even in seemingly safe areas. He noted that while some players form peaceful agreements to collect loot, the game’s design naturally encourages others to eventually betray that peace for their own gain.

We don’t want players to feel completely secure, even on our servers. We never intended to create lobbies where everyone is friendly, and we want to maintain the element of surprise and potential betrayal that comes with playing alongside other humans. Players might take advantage of kindness or turn on each other, and that’s something we want to keep in the game. Because of this, we’re not planning to add a purely PvE mode where players would always be safe.

Despite Flashpoint being a difficult game, making it easier would actually hurt the experience. The game thrives on players constantly searching for any edge they can find in a harsh environment, and Embark Studios seems committed to maintaining that challenge, even adjusting the game based on player feedback to prevent overly easy cooperative strategies.

As a player, I’ve noticed a really interesting pattern. When people who usually focus on player-versus-player combat start losing a lot, they tend to switch to just peacefully building up their resources – what some call ‘Care Bear’ style. But then you see the opposite happening too! Players who are usually peaceful start getting rich and then jump into PvP. It’s like these two groups are always shifting, and honestly, it’s great for the game. It means we’re giving the developers a lot of feedback about what’s working and what isn’t.

This is a clever way to use player feedback, and it’s sure to keep people playing ARC Raiders for a long time.
