How Blake Lively & Ryan Reynolds’ Kids Pranked Her on April Fool’s Day

Blake Lively is raising some pranksters.

Blake Lively, known for her role in It Ends With Us, was playfully tricked by her and Ryan Reynolds’ children—James, 11, Inez, 9, Betty, 6, and Olin, 3—on April Fool’s Day, and she might be second-guessing her decision to participate.

On April 1st, Blake Lively posted a video to her Instagram Story showing her kids pulling a funny prank. She playfully commented that she regretted teaching them how to use a calendar.

In a brief video, the 38-year-old showed viewers her toilet, which had pink markings on the lid. She then repeatedly pressed the center of the seat to highlight that it was covered in plastic wrap.

Blake and Ryan, who have been married since 2012, generally prefer to keep their children private, but they often talk openly about their experiences as parents.

As a lifestyle expert, I’ve been following Ryan Reynolds’ parenting style with a lot of interest, and he recently shared some insights with me. He and Blake Lively really focus on gentle parenting – it’s all about being understanding and supportive – but they still maintain a firm hand and are definitely the ones in charge. It’s a great balance, really!

Speaking at a Wall Street Journal event in New York City last November, the 49-year-old noted that ‘soft parenting’ – a style without a lot of yelling or punishment – wasn’t how they were raised. They added that experiencing hardship isn’t a requirement for achieving success, saying, ‘You don’t have to be messed up to create good things.’

He continued, saying his children felt secure. Despite acknowledging they could still be mischievous – he jokingly referred to them as “spawns of Satan” and even called himself Satan – he emphasized they were, at their core, still just kids.

Even with the busy life of raising four children, Ryan is open to having more. He told TopMob News in July 2024, “I’d love to have as many kids as possible! The more little ones running around and making a mess, the better!”

Blake also feels good about being a parent, but it took some effort to balance raising her children with her demanding work life.

In an August 2024 interview with Vogue, the former Gossip Girl star explained that her life feels more personal now. She described a typical scene – having a deep conversation while her kids playfully dance around like chickens – as a perfect representation of who she is.

During a 2018 appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Ryan Reynolds jokingly claimed that if you watch Frozen in reverse, it’s surprisingly similar to a scene-by-scene recreation of The Exorcist. He said he’s watched Frozen countless times with his daughters, and few people realize this.

Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively publicly introduced their daughters, James and Inez, for the first time on December 15, 2016, at Reynolds’ Hollywood Walk of Fame star ceremony – a place where many private celebrities choose to reveal their children to the world. In his acceptance speech, Reynolds lovingly told Lively, “You make everything better—absolutely everything in my life. You’ve given us two amazing children, and you’ve made me the father I always dreamed of being, even though I thought I’d only be the fun uncle.”

Before their second daughter was born in August 2016, Ryan Reynolds shared with TopMob News how much joy having a baby brought him, saying it was the most grounding and wonderful experience of his life.

Becoming a mom isn’t always glamorous – there’s definitely mess involved! – but it’s incredibly rewarding,” she told NW Magazine in 2016. “Even on the hard days when I’m tired, I feel so lucky.”

During a 2015 appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman, Ryan Reynolds spoke enthusiastically about his wife and daughter. He jokingly explained just how much he loved them both, saying, “I would take a bullet for my wife. I could never love anything as much as I love her.” However, he immediately added that when he first saw his daughter, he realized he’d protect her even at the cost of using his wife as a shield.

Ryan Reynolds, known for his sarcastic wit, shared a funny parenting observation on Twitter in 2016. He tweeted that being a father is the best feeling in the world, but jokingly added that he also really enjoyed the years before he had kids.

Oh my gosh, you guys, back in 2016, Ryan Reynolds was on Today and he was just SO sweet! He was talking about being a dad and he said he always does all the tough stuff, the ‘dirty work’ as he called it. He was totally happy about it, and said Blake does her share too, but he loves being the one to get up in the middle of the night! He’s just the best, seriously. He doesn’t even mind the sleepless nights, he actually likes it! It’s so adorable!

Fatherhood, he said, has been “amazing.”

In 2016, Reynolds described a rare and touching morning when his daughter really didn’t want him to leave for work—simply because her mother was still sleeping. He explained that it was incredibly difficult to walk away, saying it was truly heartbreaking.

In 2016, Ryan Reynolds recounted a funny experience watching the Super Bowl with his daughter. She spotted him on screen—there were twelve of him—and jokingly dismissed it, saying it was like seeing ’24 useless boobs.’ Reynolds said she wasn’t impressed at all, simply reacting with a shrug and ‘Eh, whatever.’

It was unbelievably tough seeing my little girl head off on her own for the first time! I was a wreck dropping her off at Burning Man, honestly. I tweeted about it back in 2016 – it was a really emotional moment for me as her dad.

The proud father raved about his daughter in 2015, then shared an update on her development. He said they were hearing lots of baby sounds, but she hadn’t started speaking clear words yet, joking that he was playfully teasing her.

In a 2015 Instagram post, Blake Lively playfully hinted that she suspected Ryan Reynolds was the father of their baby, writing, ‘Since the day our baby was born, I’ve felt so strongly in my heart that you were most likely the father.’ She finished the post with a sweet message, ‘#ILoveYouSoMuchItsSilly’.

Blake Lively once described parenthood as a series of constant surprises. You’re never quite sure what’s coming next – a messy moment, a heartwarming smile, or a sudden outburst of tears. She playfully compared it to living with someone unpredictable, but emphasized that despite the challenges, she couldn’t imagine life without her children, because they grow up so fast. She joked she’d still be having babies if she could, even as an elderly woman.

Blake Lively shared in 2015 that family is what truly matters. Despite having unusual careers, she emphasized that everyone is connected through their families, and that’s a wonderful thing.

In a 2015 tweet, Ryan Reynolds shared a touching Father’s Day moment: his daughter’s smile. He said it meant more to him than any present, especially because he was about to leave home for six years to write a book about being a parent.

He once revealed to TopMob News while promoting his 2015 film, Woman in Gold, that he’d occasionally wake up and realize he’d been walking for five minutes without even realizing it.

It’s funny, isn’t it? You adore them. You’ll wake up several times during the night with a goofy grin, and I was just telling someone that. If anything else disturbed your sleep that often, you’d be furious. But with a baby, those interruptions feel like the greatest joy.

It’s pretty common for people to meet, have a few drinks, and then start a family. But in my case, it was different – I was completely sober when it happened,” Reynolds quipped in 2016.

It’s incredible how universal parenthood is, yet how deeply meaningful it feels. It’s funny, though, because we often feel embarrassed for celebrities when they talk about their children as if their experience is unique – like their child is the first one ever born!

Reynolds admitted he’s completely smitten with his then-only child, James. “I adore him,” he said in 2015, adding with a laugh, “It’s ridiculous how much she controls me. When she says ‘Dada,’ I’d do anything for her.”
