It’s unclear what Sony’s plans are for its next gaming console. If they’re still aiming to release it in 2027, they’ll face some major choices.
Prices are rising across the board, especially for technology. The cost of parts, driven up by demand from AI companies and complicated by economic factors like US tariffs, has led to the new PS5 Pro being priced at a surprisingly high $899.99.
There’s speculation the next PlayStation (PS6) might cost around $1,000 if it comes out next year, but it’s unclear if Sony will actually price it that high.
One other question that remains is how the company will handle the console’s handheld model.
Okay, so if you’ve been following along with the gaming news here, there’s a really good chance Sony is working on a new handheld console – a PS6 portable, basically. And the cool part is, it looks like it’ll let you play all the same games as your PS5 or whatever other Sony devices you have. Pretty awesome, right?
In an online discussion about the potential power of the new handheld console, a user known as KeplerL2, who is known for leaking information, claimed its graphics processing unit (GPU) is slightly more powerful than the Xbox Series S in standard graphics rendering, and significantly more powerful when it comes to ray tracing.
He explained that the new version of PSSR – Sony’s AI technology for improving image quality, created with AMD for the PS5 Pro – should allow for greater performance within a compact design.
We don’t yet know if the handheld device will be able to play games designed for the PlayStation 6. However, since the next generation of consoles is expected to support games from older generations for a while, it might not be a significant issue.
Recently it was rumoured that you may even be able to dock the device, a bit like the Switch 2.
But the details around all this still seem a bit shaky to us.
Will Sony release a pricey, portable gaming device that connects to a dock, along with its new console? And even without considering recent price increases, wouldn’t buying both be too expensive for most people?
We’ll likely have to wait for Sony to officially announce what they’re planning before we have a clear understanding – but that depends on whether their plans are still the same.
