Since The Sopranos, Sons of Anarchy has become one of the most popular and highly-regarded crime dramas on television. Created by Kurt Sutter, the show followed a California motorcycle club, SAMCRO, from 2008 to 2014, and significantly boosted viewership and recognition for the FX network. Similar to The Sopranos, the final season and series finale of Sons of Anarchy proved very controversial, sparking ongoing debate among fans for over a decade about how the story could have ended differently.
I’ve been a huge fan of the Sons of Anarchy world ever since the original show wrapped, and we’ve all been hoping for more. When Mayans M.C. came out in 2018, focusing on a Mayans chapter down in Southern California, it was awesome, but it also got us thinking about what came before Sons of Anarchy. Well, after twelve years of waiting, Kurt Sutter finally has some official news about a potential prequel! I’m so excited to hear what he’s been working on.
Sons of Anarchy Creator Updates Fans On SAMCRO Prequel Series

Kurt Sutter, speaking to Deadline, described a deepening friendship with FX Networks Chairman John Landgraf since leaving FX. He said their close relationship is a positive force in his life, and he trusts Landgraf’s appreciation for his creative work. Sutter indicated a potential future project could happen when the timing and circumstances are right, but emphasized their conversations are generally about broader industry topics, not focused on chasing one specific deal.
It might seem like a Sons of Anarchy prequel is still just a distant possibility, but Kurt Sutter did offer fans some encouraging news: the SAMCRO prequel series could eventually be made.
I definitely feel like there are more stories we could explore, and I’d love to revisit this project if the opportunity arises. It’s not something I’m ruling out, but I’m also open to whatever the future holds and willing to go in whatever direction my career takes me.
Is Sons of Anarchy Still Relevant Enough For A Prequel?

Did Sons of Anarchy overstay its welcome? For some, especially by Season 7 when Jax Teller became increasingly violent, the answer is yes. However, the show was compelling because of the rich history of SAMCRO, the biker club, and its founding members, known as the “First 9.” Many of these original members, including Jax’s father and Piney Winston, were Vietnam War veterans. The club started as a way for disillusioned men to reject societal norms, prioritizing brotherhood and community. But some members, like Clay Morrow and Gemma Teller, craved power and wealth, leading them to embrace criminal activity.
The planned series, Sons of Anarchy: First 9, promised a dramatic, Shakespearean-level story – much like the original Sons of Anarchy, which was loosely based on Hamlet. It would explore the tragic decline of the biker club, showing how they lost their original ideals and the consequences for those involved. For devoted fans, it would offer crucial backstory, and creator Kurt Sutter could reveal surprising new details about the events surrounding SAMCRO’s First 9 – secrets that Jax never knew.
