Star Wars Confirms Plans To Fix An Obi-Wan Kenobi Villain Problem

The new series continuing the story of the Clone Wars will address a major criticism of the Obi-Wan Kenobi show. While that Disney+ series successfully brought the Inquisitors – powerful, Jedi-hunting agents of the Empire – to life with Ewan McGregor, many fans felt they weren’t convincing as villains. They repeatedly tried and failed to capture Obi-Wan, which made them seem ineffective and more like plot devices than genuine threats.

After some Star Wars fans expressed disappointment with how the Inquisitors were shown in Obi-Wan Kenobi, the upcoming series Maul: Shadow Lord aims to address those concerns. Supervising director Brad Rau told GamesRadar that the Inquisitors in this 2026 sequel to The Clone Wars will be significantly more frightening and unsettling than they’ve appeared before, featuring characters like the Eleventh Brother and Marrok, a villain from Ahsoka.

We spent a lot of time discussing how to make the Inquisitors truly terrifying – even more frightening than they’ve ever been, aiming for a genuinely horrifying effect.

Rau complimented A.J. LoCascio’s performance as Marrok, but pointed out that this iteration of the character moves very slowly, resembling a classic horror monster.

A.J.’s performance really delivered on that unsettling feeling. We specifically designed the fight with Marrok to emphasize this, making him move with a disturbing combination of slowness, like a classic horror creature, and sudden bursts of speed, almost like a ghost. It was a lot of fun playing with those contrasts and creating that effect.

The comic series Maul: Shadow Lord aims to fix a common complaint about the Inquisitors in Star Wars. Instead of being skilled but ultimately defeated villains, they’ll be portrayed as truly frightening and unsettling enemies specifically hunting down Maul for the Empire.

The comic Maul: Shadow Lord has a great chance to show why the Inquisitors – characters like Marrok and the Eleventh Brother – were so terrifying after Order 66. It could re-establish them as truly frightening hunters, unlike their portrayal in Obi-Wan Kenobi, where they seemed less threatening.

The new Star Wars series, Maul: Shadow Lord, will debut on Disney+ with two episodes on April 6th.

Why Maul’s Rivalry With the Inquisitors Is More Compelling

Beyond solving the issues with the Inquisitors in Star Wars, the conflict between Maul and these villains is much more interesting than what we saw in Obi-Wan Kenobi. This is because Maul is at the height of his power as a Sith Lord, and he’s actively working to rebuild his criminal organization while the Empire is still new.

Maul is a more dangerous opponent for the Inquisitors because he’s chaotic and unpredictable. While Jedi are restricted by their code and only kill when absolutely necessary, Maul can attack to kill immediately and without any hesitation, free from moral concerns or fear of repercussions.

The fights between Maul and the Inquisitors are especially interesting because they happen in the unpredictable criminal world of Janix. This lawless environment turns every battle into a chaotic, high-stakes game where loyalties can change in an instant. Adding to the complexity, Brander Lawson, the main villain from Maul: Shadow Lord, and his forces could intervene at any time, making things difficult for everyone involved.
