Charlie Day, the voice of Luigi in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, has some ideas about who should play Wario in a future installment.
Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach team up again, this time traveling beyond the galaxy to rescue Princess Rosalina from the mischievous Bowser Jr. The new Super Mario Galaxy Movie takes the adventure to a larger scale, leaving the Mushroom Kingdom behind and introducing the beloved Yoshi, who fans briefly saw in the first film. Despite featuring many familiar Super Mario characters, viewers are still hoping to see Wario, Mario’s rival, appear on screen.
During a conversation with ScreenRant’s Ash Crossan, Day revealed his ideal choice for the role of Wario: his It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia co-star, Danny DeVito. He believes DeVito would be a perfect fit for the Mario universe and would excel as Wario.
Several stars were asked who they’d ideally like to see in future roles. Anya Taylor-Joy, the voice of Peach, mentioned Jessica Lange as someone who could be a great addition, though she wasn’t sure what part Lange would play. Keegan-Michael Key, who voices Toad, thought about who could play Princess Daisy and quickly suggested Chloe Moretz, praising her voice and saying she’d be a good fit. He added that they were seriously considering different actors for these roles and he felt good about his suggestion.
Wario made his debut in the 1992 game Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins. In that game, he steals Mario’s castle and hides six Golden Coins throughout the land. He’s usually portrayed as greedy and loud, and often acts as a mischievous character rather than a traditional hero in the Mario series. After Super Mario Land 2, Wario got his own series of games, starting with Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3.
Before The Super Mario Galaxy Movie came out, fans started speculating that Wario would be the villain in a possible sequel. This led to a lot of discussion about who should play him. Some popular choices included Pedro Pascal, John Goodman, Danny McBride, and Danny Trejo, but many fans most wanted Danny DeVito for the role.
Danny DeVito is famous for playing wild, boisterous, and often selfish characters, like Frank Reynolds in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and The Penguin in Batman Returns. He’s also a talented voice actor, which makes him a great fit for the world of Super Mario. In a 2024 interview with The Movie Dweeb, DeVito said he’d love to play Wario in a future Mario movie, joking that he’d “take them to the cleaners” if they cast him.
Wario wasn’t in the second movie, but fans expect he’ll appear in a future installment. The post-credits scene of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie suggests more characters will join the film’s world, and it’s likely Wario will be among them soon.
Currently, Nintendo and Illumination haven’t announced plans for another Super Mario Movie, but things are looking promising. Fans are still guessing who will voice Wario, and now Danny DeVito has a fellow cast member supporting his bid for the role.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is now playing in theaters.
