A new show set in the world of Game of Thrones is coming this summer, and it will focus on a Stark family member who was previously unaccounted for.
Based on George R.R. Martin’s world of Westeros, the new play Game of Thrones: The Mad King will premiere at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon on July 20th and run until September 5th, as reported by Variety. The play will feature Brandon Stark, Ned Stark’s brother, a character who never appeared in the original HBO series, not even in flashback scenes.
Directed by Dominic Cooke and written by Duncan Macmillan, with George R.R. Martin as an executive producer, The Mad King is a prequel to A Song of Ice and Fire. The series will focus on the events of a tournament at Harrenhal and Robert’s Rebellion, bringing together characters both new and familiar to fans of Game of Thrones, such as Ned Stark, Lyanna Stark, Brandon Stark, Robert Baratheon, Jamie Lannister, and Varys.
The story takes place during the reign of King Aerys II, a troubled ruler. A secret plot to overthrow him is developing, and will be central to the narrative. We’ll also see the forbidden romance between Lyanna and Prince Rhaegar Targaryen, despite Lyanna being promised in marriage to Robert Baratheon.
The play’s premiere date has been announced, along with the full creative team. Nick Barnes and Finn Caldwell will direct the puppetry and movement, with Scarlet Wilderink assisting. Chloe Lamford is designing the set, aided by Machiko Weston. Georgia McGuinness is handling costumes, with assistance from Alex Barry. Jon Clark will create the lighting, while Will Stuart composes the music and Tom Gibbons designs the sound, with Alex Twiselton assisting on sound. Emily Raymond is the associate director and Lenore Gallegos is the assistant director. Amy Ball is in charge of casting, and Jeannette Nelson will focus on voice and text. Hazel Holder is the dialect coach, Francesca Roche is consulting on period dance, and Ti Mikkel is serving as a creative consultant.
Simon Painter, Tim Lawson, Mark Manuel and Sir Leonard Blavatnik serve as co-producers.
Daniel Evans and Tamara Harvey, co-artistic directors of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, announced that their new production, The Mad King, will involve a redesigned theatre space. This will place the audience right in the middle of the story, creating an immersive and spectacular experience they hope will be truly memorable.
As a huge fan of immersive storytelling, I’m incredibly excited about this new stage adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s world. They’ve assembled a seriously talented team and are completely rethinking how we experience the story – the Royal Shakespeare Theatre is being transformed to put the audience right in the middle of everything! It sounds incredibly ambitious and thrilling, and I can’t wait to be swept away by the spectacle. It promises to be an unforgettable theatrical event.
Following the conclusion of Game of Thrones in 2019, HBO and George R.R. Martin started building a whole series of shows based on his fantasy world. The first of these, House of the Dragon, which is based on Martin’s book Fire & Blood, premiered in 2022, and its second season aired in 2024. Season 3 of House of the Dragon is anticipated to launch this summer.
HBO released a second spin-off series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, earlier this year. Based on George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg stories, the six-episode show was well-received by both critics and viewers. Filming for the second season began in December.
Both spinoffs currently hold an average Rotten Tomatoes score of 87% and 94%, respectively.
Martin is adapting Game of Thrones for the stage, offering fans a brand new way to experience the world they love. Tickets for Game of Thrones: The Mad King will be available starting in April.
