Hulu Is Streaming One of the Greatest Animated Franchises Ever Made (& There’s More on the Way)

Animation is having a huge moment! After a record-breaking 2025 with hits like Zootopia 2 and New Zha II, 2026 is continuing that success with big releases such as Toy Story 5 and Minions & Monsters. Looking ahead, 2027 promises to be another fantastic year for animation, and will even bring back a beloved animated franchise to theaters after over ten years – you can currently stream the original films on Hulu.

Get ready for Shrek 5! Before the new movie arrives in June 2027, you can revisit the first four Shrek films – Shrek, Shrek 2, Shrek the Third, and Shrek Forever After – now streaming on Hulu as of April 1st. Based on William Steig’s book, the popular DreamWorks animated series follows the adventures of Shrek, a lovable ogre who unexpectedly becomes a hero. It’s become one of the most successful animated franchises ever, earning over $4 billion worldwide – making it the second highest-grossing of all time!

Shrek Revolutionized Animation and Still Shows No Signs of Slowing Down

Shrek was a huge success, earning $484 million worldwide, but it also fundamentally changed how animated movies were made. It won the very first Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and pushed the boundaries of computer animation with incredibly realistic character expressions, fur, clothing, and effects like lighting and fire. Unlike typical Disney fairy tales, Shrek used self-aware humor, clever writing, and a popular music soundtrack, offering a fresh and modern approach to animated storytelling.

The original Shrek film was such a hit that it led to three sequels, two Puss in Boots spin-offs, and continues to be popular 25 years later. A fifth Shrek movie is planned for release on June 30, 2027, and will be the first time Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz return as Shrek, Donkey, and Fiona in 17 years. DreamWorks is keeping plot details secret, but the last film ended with Shrek happily settled as a husband and father, having saved reality itself.

What’s New on Hulu?

Starting April 1st, Hulu added a bunch of new movies, including the popular Shrek series. Families can now enjoy other DreamWorks films like Shark Tale and The Croods, plus the first three Night At The Museum movies and Monster House. Other new additions include The Day After Tomorrow, Napoleon Dynamite, and 21 Jump Street.
