It’s been over ten years since the last Lord of the Rings movie, but the franchise is coming back to theaters! A new film, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, is planned for December 2027 and will expand on the story of the original trilogy. A major draw for fans is the return of familiar faces – several actors from the original films are reprising their roles. Andy Serkis is back as Gollum and will also direct, and Elijah Wood will once again play Frodo. He’s recently talked about his involvement in the project.
During an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Andy Wood discussed The Hunt for Gollum and whether it needs to reach the same level of success as the original Lord of the Rings trilogy. He explained that it doesn’t have to, because it’s a separate story, not part of the main trilogy or based directly on the books. However, it does draw from the established lore and characters, acting as a ‘side quest’ or additional story. Wood believes this will give viewers a deeper understanding of Gollum, building on the brief glimpse of his history shown in the prologue of Return of the King.
He explained that this project meant a lot to Andy, and he’d likely discuss its significance. The team initially latched onto a small idea, but as they developed it, they discovered the core reason for doing it – a powerful motivation that gave the work genuine meaning and honesty. Wood also pointed out that many of the original crew from the Lord of the Rings films are involved, which will help maintain a feeling of realism and authenticity.
The “Why?” Is the Biggest Question The Hunt for Gollum Needs to Answer

As a huge film fan, I think everyone agrees the original Lord of the Rings trilogy is truly special – it’s consistently praised and even won 11 Oscars, which was a record at the time for Return of the King. But looking at Middle-earth on screen as a whole, it’s been a bit of a mixed bag. The Hobbit films made a lot of money, but they didn’t quite capture the magic, even with Peter Jackson back at the helm. There were reasons why – stretching a single book into three movies definitely didn’t help – and honestly, it feels like Lord of the Rings was a unique moment, a perfect storm that’s incredibly hard to replicate. It really showed us that sometimes lightning does strike, but it doesn’t always strike twice.
Wood’s discussion of the core question – “why make this movie?” – is especially important because that’s the biggest challenge facing The Hunt for Gollum. After some viewers were disappointed with The Hobbit, it’s been hard to generate excitement for another big-screen adventure in Middle-earth. The concept feels like a typical Hollywood attempt to capitalize on fans’ love for a well-known story, relying heavily on familiar characters and elements. As Wood points out, The Hunt for Gollum takes place between the events of The Fellowship of the Ring, following Gandalf and Aragorn as they try to find Gollum after Gandalf discovers Bilbo had the One Ring.
While The Hunt for Gollum is based on parts of J.R.R. Tolkien’s book, the story feels a little too small to support an entire movie. Gandalf and Aragorn’s quest is just a minor element of the larger novel, and stretching it into a blockbuster risks making the plot feel weak and unengaging. Adding to these concerns, reports suggest the character of Aragorn will be played by a younger actor, which could create another hurdle for the film. If fans don’t see a compelling reason to watch, The Hunt for Gollum might be overlooked.
Film history has shown us that unexpected movies can be great, so there’s a chance The Hunt for Gollum will be a pleasant surprise. While it feels like the studio might be capitalizing on a popular franchise, the filmmakers genuinely love the source material and understand the importance of telling this story. This spinoff isn’t as large in scale as the original trilogy, but it’s still expanding that world, and it needs to feel like a natural and worthwhile addition. Hopefully, fans will see the purpose behind the movie when they finally get to experience what Andy Serkis and his team have created.
