Amazon MGM is celebrating a big win with Project Hail Mary. Ryan Gosling’s sci-fi film is the first major box office success of 2026. It’s already earned $330 million and broken Amazon’s box office records in just two weeks. The movie is a hit with audiences, currently boasting a 96% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Amazon MGM is thrilled with the positive response to its recent films. After years of planning following Amazon’s acquisition of MGM, the studio aimed to become a significant force in movie theaters by 2026. While Crime 101 didn’t perform as expected, the success of Project Hail Mary demonstrates Amazon MGM’s ability to create, release, and promote large-scale, blockbuster films.
This is encouraging for Amazon’s plans, including the upcoming James Bond reboot directed by Denis Villeneuve. While Bond 26 is likely to do well, that wasn’t necessarily true for Project Hail Mary. The same uncertainty surrounded their next big film, Masters of the Universe. However, the positive reception to Project Hail Mary gives more reason to be optimistic about Masters of the Universe’s potential success.
Project Hail Mary Was Viewed As A Risk Before Release
Let’s be honest, Project Hail Mary wasn’t a slam dunk for Amazon. Everyone was hoping it would replicate the success of The Martian – another Andy Weir novel turned blockbuster – but there was a real risk it could have flopped spectacularly. A lot had to go right to avoid a major financial loss, and it wasn’t a sure thing by any means. As a critic, I remember thinking it could go either way!
Before its release, there was a lot of discussion about how much money was spent on Project Hail Mary. Amazon reportedly gave directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller a large budget – around $200 million after tax credits – to ensure the film was a success. This was a considerable risk for Amazon MGM, as they hadn’t previously produced a movie that earned over $300 million.
By standard Hollywood calculations, Project Hail Mary needed to earn $500 million worldwide just to cover its costs. Early box office predictions suggested it could perform anywhere from exceeding $600 million to falling short with around $100 million in earnings, leaving its ultimate financial success uncertain.
Beyond the film’s large budget, there were worries about Ryan Gosling’s track record as a star in big-budget movies. While he significantly contributed to the massive success of Barbie ($1.4 billion worldwide), that success didn’t carry over to his 2024 film, The Fall Guy. It had a weak start and ultimately earned only $181 million globally.
Many people questioned whether Ryan Gosling was a big enough draw to get audiences into theaters for Project Hail Mary. Despite starring in films like The Fall Guy, Blade Runner 2049, and First Man, none of those movies were massive box office successes, so it was reasonable to doubt whether he had the star power to lead such a large-scale project.
I’m so thrilled with how Project Hail Mary is doing! It’s clearly a huge win for everyone involved – Amazon, Ryan Gosling, and movie fans like me. It’s already looking like a big money-maker, which proves Amazon can really deliver in theaters. And honestly, it’s boosted Ryan Gosling’s star power even more! I’m predicting we’ll see a lot of Oscar buzz for it in 2027 – maybe even multiple nominations!
The risk paid off big time, and now Amazon is looking to do it again.
Masters Of The Universe Is Another Risk For Amazon MGM
The studio’s next project is Masters of the Universe. Mattel’s popular franchise is returning to the big screen, aiming to finally make He-Man a movie star. Bumblebee director Travis Knight will helm the film, with Nicholas Galitzine playing Prince Adam and Jared Leto taking on the role of Skeletor.
Despite the established fanbase for Masters of the Universe, a new movie is a gamble. The 1987 film starring Dolph Lundgren flopped, earning just $17.3 million. Unlike some older, unpopular movies that have gained a cult following over the years, this one hasn’t been rediscovered and embraced by fans.
It’s fair to wonder if today’s audiences really remember He-Man, or even want a new live-action movie, especially one that’s rumored to cost $170 million (according to Variety). The franchise has seen some recent success, though, like Kevin Smith’s Masters of the Universe animated series on Netflix, which continued the story of the original show.
The challenge for Masters of the Universe is attracting a new generation of viewers without alienating longtime fans from the original 1980s series. To be a hit for Amazon, the show needs to appeal to both groups, which can be a difficult balancing act, as history has shown.
Launching Masters of the Universe in the summer might be a challenge. However, its release date of June 5th suggests Amazon is confident it will perform well initially and maintain a solid audience throughout the summer months.
However, the movie faces stiff competition. The Mandalorian and Grogu will be released just two weeks prior, and in the rest of June, audiences will also have Disclosure Day from Steven Spielberg, Toy Story 5, and Supergirl to choose from. Unless Masters of the Universe receives overwhelmingly positive reviews or really captures the public’s interest, it could easily get overshadowed by the many other big summer releases.
Masters Of The Universe’s New Trailer Shows Why It Could Be Amazon’s Next Blockbuster Hit
While Masters of the Universe and Project Hail Mary are quite different, Project Hail Mary gives us more confidence in Amazon’s approach to its remakes. They seem just as enthusiastic about this 80s reboot as they were about the sci-fi movie with Ryan Gosling, and it’s becoming clearer why they have that confidence.
Now that Project Hail Mary is doing well, Amazon is turning its attention to Masters of the Universe. They have about two months to get people excited about seeing it in cinemas, and the new trailer is a good start.
The new trailer makes Masters of the Universe look like a thrilling, action-filled adventure. Galitzine seems perfect as He-Man, and Skeletor is suitably scary. The trailer also includes some humor and emotional moments, and early reactions online have been very positive. It looks like Amazon is successfully building anticipation for what could be their next big hit.
Similar to how anticipation built for Project Hail Mary before its release, Masters of the Universe could experience a similar boost in excitement. Amazon MGM is expected to heavily feature the movie at CinemaCon on April 15th. If the film lives up to expectations, Amazon might lift review embargoes early to generate buzz and establish the reboot as a major franchise.
