‘Dexter: Resurrection’ Casts ‘Succession’ Icon as New York Ripper

Be warned, this article contains spoilers for Season 1 of Dexter: New Blood! This season, the fourth installment in the Dexter series, showed that the show still has plenty of compelling stories to tell. It moved Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall), the serial killer who tries to do good, to New York City, where he found his son, Harrison (Jack Alcott), and became involved with a secret group of killers led by the wealthy Leon Prater (Peter Dinklage). Prater possessed a file detailing the crimes of the New York Ripper, an unsolved case from years ago. The police obtained this file at the end of the season, suggesting the Ripper will be a major focus in Season 2.

Brian Cox has been cast in the role. This is a fitting choice, as Cox previously played Hannibal Lecter in the 1986 film Manhunter, before Anthony Hopkins became famous for the part in The Silence of the Lambs. More recently, he’s known for playing the powerful and ruthless Logan Roy in Succession, a role that shares some similarities with Dexter: Resurrection. While Logan wasn’t a murderer, he was a manipulative and calculating man living in New York City – a surprisingly relevant connection.

Brian Cox was nominated for an Emmy three times for his role in Succession, but didn’t win. Fortunately, he had already won two Emmys prior to that. He first won in 2001 for his supporting role as Hermann Göring in the miniseries Nuremberg, and again in 2025 for a commercial he did with Uber.

I was really disturbed learning Don Framt was the New York Ripper at the end of Dexter: Resurrection Season 1. What’s even more chilling, according to Variety, is that even though he’s stopped killing, he’s still finding ways to torment the people he hurt years ago. It reminded me of cases like the Golden State Killer, Joseph James DeAngelo. He terrorized people with 13 murders back in the 70s and 80s, but wasn’t caught until 2018 – he was 72 at the time! It’s unsettling how long some of these killers can hide, and even continue to inflict pain from afar.

Watching a talented actor like Brian Cox interact with Rebecca Hall and the rest of the cast of Resurrection should be fantastic. The show demonstrated a knack for attracting skilled performers in its first season, bringing in Peter Dinklage and another Emmy winner, Uma Thurman, who played a character named Charley Brown. Though Thurman’s character didn’t return after Season 1, Cox brings a similar level of star power to the show.

The second season of Dexter: Resurrection is due to premiere on Showtime in October 2026.
