The beginning of the year has been relatively calm for new Dungeons & Dragons releases. The official content schedule doesn’t gain momentum until the launch of the Season of Horror this summer. As a result, players have mostly been enjoying content created by third-party publishers. However, while the new Ravenloft book isn’t available for a few more months, Dungeons & Dragons has just released a new Unearthed Arcana playtest. This allows fans to try out new evil character options and explore different ways for their characters to embrace darkness.
On April 2nd, Wizards of the Coast released new playtest materials on D&D Beyond, called Unearthed Arcana. This allows D&D players to preview upcoming content and provide feedback that helps shape the game. Unearthed Arcana often gives us a sneak peek at future updates – like when we tested horror-themed classes before the official Season of Horror. This time, the new playtest focuses on villainous character options, suggesting that D&D is exploring darker themes.
New D&D Unearthed Arcana Shows Off Evil New Subclasses & Paths to Villainy
The latest playtest content for villainous character options is now available on the D&D Beyond website! You can download the free PDF and start exploring these new subclasses and abilities. Keep in mind that Wizards of the Coast is still working on these options and wants your feedback. A survey will be released on April 9th to gather your thoughts after you’ve had a chance to try them out.
This playtest includes a significant amount of new content, featuring 4 new character subclasses. It also introduces “Villainous Paths,” which allow players to fully embrace playing evil characters. If you like playing as an antihero or villain, or are curious to try it, these options offer a fun way to explore that side of things in your next D&D campaign.
The latest Unearthed Arcana introduces four new character options: the Pestilence Domain Cleric, Circle of the Titan Druid, Hell Knight Fighter, and Demonic Sorcery Sorcerer. These options all explore a more sinister side of their respective classes. For example, the Pestilence Domain Cleric doesn’t focus on healing like most clerics. Instead, it embraces disease and decay, granting you resistance to necrotic and poison damage and allowing you to overcome the same resistance in your enemies.
Okay, so some of these classes are intense. Like, I’m checking out the Circle of the Titan Druid, and apparently, if society’s messing with nature, they just… turn into a giant beast and tear it all down. No subtlety there! And the Hell Knight Fighter? Totally champions of devils, bringing fiery, hell-powered weapons to every fight. Then you’ve got the Demonic Sorcery Sorcerer, who basically gets their magic straight from demons – talk about chaotic and unpredictable power!

This update introduces new character options and villainous paths. These paths offer a series of feats that let players develop a character’s journey from a normal person into a powerful villain. One option is the Path of the Death Knight, for players who want to create a fallen warrior, now undead and driven by a thirst for blood. If you’d rather play an evil spellcaster, the Path of the Lich provides feats to transform your character into a Lich, potentially as terrifying as the infamous Szass Tam.
I’m really excited about these new evil options they’re playtesting! No one knows if they’ll actually make it into the official rules, but they look awesome and I definitely want to try them out. You can check out the playtest stuff and give your thoughts over on D&D Beyond. The survey to give feedback opens on April 9th and will probably be open for a few weeks, but thankfully the Unearthed Arcana document itself should stay available for a while after that.
