As streaming services compete for anime fans, the ‘isekai’ genre – stories about people transported to another world – is becoming increasingly popular. Netflix already hosts several well-known isekai series like Uncle From Another World, The Rising of the Shield Hero, Konosuba, and Overlord. And now, they’re adding another major isekai anime, though there’s a slight catch to this new partnership.
I’m so excited that Shangri-La Frontier is really taking off as a fantastic isekai! It’s still growing, and while it has a ways to go to reach the popularity of giants like Sword Art Online and That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, more and more people are discovering Sunraku’s incredible journey. The best news? Season one is hitting Netflix on May 1st! We’re all hoping Netflix picks up the rest of the series too, so we can see Sunraku’s whole story!
Shangri-La Frontier’s Rise in Power

Good news for fans of Shangri-La Frontier! A third season is coming from Studio C2C, continuing Sunraku’s story. While the hero’s adventures happen inside a video game, the show’s smooth animation and well-developed characters have attracted a large following. The original light novel has already sold over sixteen million copies, making it a popular series in the anime world. Some debate whether it’s truly an isekai or a virtual reality anime, but it’s definitely worth watching!
Good news for anime fans: Netflix has a lot more coming up besides Shangri-La Frontier! Dorohedoro is back for a second season, and this April brings new seasons of Wind Breaker and The Ramparts of Ice, along with the series Vivy Fluorite Eye’s Song and Dandelion. This month, Netflix is also adding the second season of the incredibly popular Jujutsu Kaisen and will be the new home for the Elbaph Arc of One Piece.
Isekai is now a hugely popular genre in anime, where the story usually starts with a character suddenly finding themselves in a completely new and unfamiliar world. As more isekai series become hits, anime fans can expect even more shows set in these imaginative and exciting places.
