Being an Anne Rice fan is exciting right now. Although the original Talamasca series only lasted a season, AMC’s take on Interview With the Vampire has become very popular, with both viewers and critics enjoying its fresh take on the classic horror story. Season three, now called The Vampire Lestat after the second book, will premiere on June 7th and promises to be even better. But fans will also remember that this isn’t the first time Lestat’s story has been adapted for the screen—and the 2002 film version is now available to stream for free.
You can now watch Queen of the Damned on Tubi. While it’s considered a sequel to the 1994 film Interview With the Vampire, the story is a little complex. The movie doesn’t follow the second book in the series; instead, it jumps ahead to the third book, The Queen of the Damned, and borrows some ideas from the second book to continue the narrative. Michael Rymer directed the film, and Stuart Townsend took over the role of Lestat (previously played by Tom Cruise). The movie also stars Aaliyah as Akasha, the ancient vampire queen, in her final film appearance.
Queen of the Damned Was a Notorious Flop (Which Makes AMC’s The Vampire Lestat All the More Exciting)
The movie Queen of the Damned combined elements from the second and third books in Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles series. It featured Lestat re-emerging in present day and leading a popular band – a nu metal group – which inadvertently roused the ancient and powerful vampire Akasha, who then sought him out. Although the premise seemed promising, the film was poorly received by both critics and audiences. Many found it to be overly silly, campy, and strange, with inconsistent acting and odd accents. Anne Rice herself later urged fans to disregard the movie, stating it drastically misrepresented her work and that a television adaptation might be a better fit for her vampires.
It’s been 24 years since Anne Rice’s vampires first appeared on screen, and now they’re back on television with AMC’s Interview With the Vampire. Despite some criticism from devoted book fans, the upcoming third season is highly anticipated. It promises to be a faithful adaptation of The Vampire Lestat, something the Queen of the Damned movie failed to achieve. If the show does Lestat well, future seasons could finally deliver a proper adaptation of The Queen of the Damned, righting a long-held disappointment for fans of Rice’s work. While we wait for the new season, even the 2022 Queen of the Damned movie is worth watching. Though it’s a bit over-the-top and unusual, it’s visually striking, and Aaliyah’s performance as Akasha is particularly memorable.
