As a big fan of the Star Wars prequels, I’m really excited about the new animated series, Maul – Shadow Lord! It feels great that Disney and Lucasfilm are still giving us content that builds on those stories. The trailers make it clear this series picks up right after Revenge of the Sith and The Clone Wars. We see Maul, still reeling from his fight with Ahsoka Tano, determined to get revenge on the Empire and anyone who betrayed his Shadow Collective.
Fans of the Star Wars prequels were thrilled to see a show focused on Maul, a key villain from The Phantom Menace. Now, there’s even more good news: prequel fans can expect at least another year of new Star Wars content they’ll enjoy. Even though the franchise is moving away from the sequel trilogy and focusing more on The Mandalorian, the prequels aren’t being forgotten.
Maul – Shadow Lord’s Early Season 2 Renewal Is Another Win For The Star Wars Prequels
The new Disney+ series Maul – Shadow Lord is already a hit! Even before its April 6th premiere, it’s been renewed for a second season. This is exciting news for fans of the Star Wars prequels, as the show expands on the story after Revenge of the Sith. It joins other recent shows and movies that continue the saga from that era.
The period between the end of Revenge of the Sith and the beginning of A New Hope has become a surprisingly rich era in Star Wars lore. Several recent projects, including Solo: A Star Wars Story, The Bad Batch, the Tales of anthology series, and Obi-Wan Kenobi, all explore what happened immediately after the events of Revenge of the Sith. Over the past 21 years, Star Wars has increasingly focused on Revenge of the Sith as a key foundation for many new stories.
The series Maul – Shadow Lord is continuing a trend of highlighting the importance of the prequel trilogy within the larger franchise. Focusing on a key villain from The Phantom Menace and The Clone Wars, Shadow Lord is set during the Empire’s early years and features the same animation style as The Clone Wars. With its renewal, Maul – Shadow Lord will keep the prequel era relevant for at least another year.
The Darth Maul Show’s Confirmed Future Is A Promising Sign For Star Wars Animation
The return of Maul – Shadow Lord is exciting news for those who enjoyed the Star Wars prequel films, and a boost for Star Wars animation overall. With The Bad Batch concluding in 2024, there hasn’t been a major, ongoing animated series. While we’ve seen anthology shows like Tales of and the non-official Star Wars Visions, plus Young Jedi Adventures for younger viewers, it’s been almost two years since a multi-season, official, and more mature animated show aired.
The future of Star Wars seems to be shifting back towards theatrical releases. While The Mandalorian and Grogu will return to the big screen, and other new Star Wars films are planned for theaters, there are fewer television projects in development. Currently, only season 2 of Ahsoka is confirmed for live-action TV, and the number of animated Star Wars series has decreased since The Bad Batch.
Now that season 2 of Maul – Shadow Lord has been confirmed, Star Wars once again has an animated series planned for multiple seasons. This shows Disney and Lucasfilm are investing in animation again, especially while they’re making fewer live-action Star Wars TV shows. If Maul – Shadow Lord does well, it could give Dave Filoni the freedom to create even more animated series.
Why The Clone Wars Era Is Still Going Strong
It’s really exciting to see Maul back in the spotlight! It also shows how much everyone still loves The Clone Wars – even though the show finished years ago, that era of Star Wars is still incredibly popular. I think a big part of that is how much happened during those years between Revenge of the Sith and the original trilogy. The Empire was at its peak, Jedi were hiding, and it gives writers a lot of room to tell new and interesting stories. It’s a really rich period in the Star Wars timeline.
The period of the Clone Wars offers rich storytelling opportunities. Shows like Andor, which focus on rebellion, and games like Jedi: Survivor, exploring persecution, are a great fit for this era, as are stories about characters finding redemption, like those in Tales of the Empire. Plus, the Galactic Empire is a famously strong villain, making it simple to create compelling stories set during its peak.

As a huge Star Wars fan, I really think The Clone Wars deserves a lot of the credit for its lasting impact. It genuinely changed how many of us feel about the prequel films – it took movies that were pretty divisive and turned them into essential parts of the Star Wars story. Plus, it aired when a lot of today’s adult fans were kids, so we basically grew up with it! But beyond nostalgia, it was just a really good show with compelling characters, and it makes total sense why people wanted it to continue.
The release of Maul – Shadow Lord demonstrates the lasting popularity of The Clone Wars within the Star Wars universe. Fans are eager for more content from the show, appreciating its unique animation and wanting to see beloved characters like Maul in fresh storylines. Clearly, creating stories connected to The Clone Wars, such as Maul – Shadow Lord, is a successful approach for Star Wars.
