All 5 Die Hard Movies, Ranked Worst to Best

Bruce Willis is best known as an action hero, but he actually began his career with comedy, appearing in shows like Moonlighting and Blind Date. He proved his versatility throughout his career with films like Death Becomes Her, Nobody’s Fool, 12 Monkeys, and The Sixth Sense, demonstrating he was much more than just an action star. However, Die Hard is what truly cemented his status as an action icon. Without it, films like The Last Boy Scout, The Fifth Element, The Jackal, Mercury Rising, and Armageddon likely wouldn’t have existed – or at least, not as we know them today.

Luckily, Die Hard didn’t suffer the fate of many action movies where only the original is great. This meant we got one of the all-time best action franchises – maybe even the very best! But how do all five movies stack up? Let’s take a look.

5) A Good Day to Die Hard

Later in his career, Bruce Willis primarily appeared in low-budget films, and often seemed disengaged, even in leading roles. Looking back, this makes sense and is especially poignant considering his aphasia diagnosis in 2022 and subsequent diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia in 2023, which understandably affected his work.

Bruce Willis’s later career included several large-budget films like A Good Day to Die Hard, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Red 2, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, Rock the Kasbah, Death Wish, Glass, and Motherless Brooklyn. However, A Good Day to Die Hard, released in 2013, feels like a low point. Even revisiting his iconic John McClane role, Willis seems disengaged. It’s understandable, as the film is a disappointing conclusion to the series and simply not a good movie. The script relies on uninspired conflict between father and son, the villain’s identity is predictable, and John McClane feels like a different character. The performance by Jai Courtney also presents a problem. While he’s improved as an actor, his work here is reminiscent of Channing Tatum’s rough start in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, before Tatum found success with 21 Jump Street and more dramatic roles like Foxcatcher.

4) Live Free or Die Hard

While Live Free or Die Hard is definitely an improvement over A Good Day to Die Hard, it’s still a pretty standard action movie from the 2000s. It’s surprisingly unremarkable, even for a talented actor like Timothy Olyphant, who doesn’t quite make an impact as the villain.

One of the biggest issues with this film is that the Die Hard series is known for its mature, R-rated action, and this installment feels watered down. It doesn’t offer anything unique compared to other action movies from the same period. Justin Long does what he can, but it’s frustrating to watch McClane constantly rescuing a complaining young man who’s glued to his laptop. Add in a strange and unnecessary cameo from Kevin Smith, and Live Free is, at best, an okay movie to watch once on a lazy afternoon.

3) Die Hard 2

Renny Harlin’s Die Hard 2 feels very similar to the first Die Hard, and that’s where it falls a little short. It essentially retreads the same ground, but this time the action happens at an airport, and, like the original, it’s set during the Christmas season.

Despite some flaws, Die Hard 2 is a strong sequel and arguably the best film director John Harlin has made. It excels at building suspense – like with the circling planes, including the one carrying Holly Gennaro – and features clever twists, such as the false arrival of reinforcements. Bruce Willis delivers a committed performance as McClane, and it’s wonderful to see Bonnie Bedelia reprise her role as Holly for the last time. While Dennis Franz’s character is intentionally annoying, the film’s strengths far outweigh its weaknesses.

2) Die Hard with a Vengeance

The idea of a single hero facing overwhelming odds is what truly defined the movie Die Hard. While it wasn’t the first film to explore this concept—Cobra did it earlier, for example—Die Hard really perfected it.

Look, after Die Hard and Die Hard 2, John McClane needed a serious assist, and Die Hard with a Vengeance absolutely delivers. Samuel L. Jackson as Zeus is, hands down, his best partner yet. The chemistry between him and Bruce Willis is electric, and a huge reason this film works so well. But let’s not forget Jeremy Irons as Simon Gruber. He was born to play that role – the writing gave him so much to work with. What I really loved is how personal the revenge plot felt, even though this was the biggest Die Hard movie yet. And those riddles? Brilliant! They genuinely put McClane and Zeus through the wringer, and had me on the edge of my seat right alongside them – even the slightly confusing one! It really ratcheted up the tension.

1) Die Hard

It’s no surprise that the original Die Hard is number one. It’s not only the best film in the Die Hard series, but many consider it the greatest action movie of all time. And it is a Christmas movie – it features Christmas music, decorations, and even a darkly humorous Christmas message. It really checks all the boxes!

This movie is flawlessly paced and incredibly engaging – every scene and character feels essential. It’s intense and thrilling, with a memorable performance by Alan Rickman as the villain, and perfectly captures the everyman appeal of John McClane. It’s a truly exceptional film, and rightfully considered one of the best ever made.
