Fuze the film ….
David Mackenzie’s new film, ‘Fuze’, features a well-known cast including Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Sam Worthington, and Theo James. There were initial plans for Peter Dinklage, Warwick Davis, and Verne Troyer to appear, but the project was ultimately recast, meaning that version of the film—dubbed ‘Short Fuze’—never came to fruition.
Fuze facts….
This film, written by Ben Hopkins, is a throwback to classic heist movies. It begins with the discovery of a large WWII bomb at a construction site. After the police evacuate, Aaron Taylor-Johnson leads an army bomb disposal team to defuse it. However, a five-person gang—including Theo James and Sam Worthington—sees the chaos as an opportunity to pull off a Hatton Garden-style robbery of an underground vault.
To set you off…..
The film starts strong with a tense and exciting first act. A bomb is constantly on the verge of exploding, and the criminals are narrowly avoiding detection by the police surrounding the area. Like many heist movies, things don’t go as planned, and there are several predictable twists. However, the criminals’ plan feels too loose and allows for unlikely errors, damaging its believability. While the filmmakers consulted with police experts to ensure the initial bomb procedure felt realistic, the plot becomes less convincing afterward, culminating in an unnecessary epilogue.
Mackenzie directs competently, and the film presents the bomb defusal and vault robbery in a straightforward, if somewhat bland, way – a little more creativity would have helped. However, a strong cast and a fast-paced 91-minute runtime keep things moving. While ‘Fuze’ isn’t a failure, it doesn’t quite live up to its potential.
