Jack Black has enjoyed a long and successful career, and he’s still incredibly popular today, thanks to smart choices he’s made along the way. Over the past ten years, he’s become a key part of big franchises like the new Jumanji, Super Mario Bros., and Minecraft movies. While these films are popular because of the established brands themselves, Black has consistently been a prominent face in their promotion, helping him connect with fans of all ages. While younger audiences love his humor, last year he also appealed to older fans with a project that initially did well in theaters and is now a huge hit on Netflix.
The recent remake of Anaconda was the most popular movie on Netflix in the U.S. for the week of March 23rd to 29th. Even more notably, it was the third most-watched movie worldwide on the platform. Over the past week, viewers watched the film for a total of 13 million hours, racking up 7.9 million views. Because Anaconda didn’t appear in the top 10 lists of other countries, its strong performance seems to be driven mainly by its success in the United States.
Why Anaconda Is a Huge Hit On Netflix In the United States

When Anaconda became available on Netflix in late March, initial data suggested it would be very popular. Now, with more detailed numbers released directly from Netflix, we have a clearer picture of just how well the film performed. It was expected that Anaconda would get a lot of views upon its arrival, as new content often does. However, the film’s success in the United States was particularly impressive. With almost 8 million views coming mainly from America, Anaconda significantly outperformed other titles. For comparison, the second most popular movie on Netflix in the U.S. last week, The Bad Guys 2, received 4.3 million views globally.
Looking at Anaconda reveals why it was popular in the U.S. but not elsewhere. The film cleverly pokes fun at Hollywood’s obsession with reboots and remakes. While this made for an enjoyable movie – and Anaconda is a standout in its series, even if critics were divided – it probably limited its success in international markets. Comedies often struggle internationally because humor is often tied to specific cultures. What one audience finds funny, another might not understand. Had Anaconda been a more traditional monster movie without the comedic focus, it might have performed better globally.
While Anaconda earned more money internationally ($69.8 million) than domestically ($65 million), this was likely due to the timing of its release during the busy holiday season and how people talked about it. Nowadays, if a movie gets mixed reviews, many viewers prefer to wait and stream it at home. That’s what happened with Anaconda. Because it wasn’t part of a huge, ongoing franchise where fans rush to see it right away, people were happy to wait a few months. If Anaconda had received better reviews, it probably would have performed better in U.S. theaters and potentially earned more than it did internationally.
Despite its modest $45 million budget, Anaconda earned a strong $135 million at the box office and continues to be popular on home video. However, plans for a sequel haven’t materialized yet. It remains to be seen if Sony will decide to make one. While revisiting the self-aware style of the 2025 reboot might not be the best approach, the film’s enjoyable cast dynamic could offer a path to a successful follow-up. If a sequel doesn’t happen, Anaconda could still find a dedicated audience through streaming.
