Hands up if you’re using PS5’s Power Saver mode? We’re not seeing many raised palms.
So, Sony added this cool feature in a recent update, and it’s part of their plan to be more environmentally friendly. I’ve been testing it out, and honestly, it does make my PlayStation use less power. The trade-off is that the graphics aren’t quite as sharp, but for me, saving energy is worth it!
There’s been a continuing rumor that this feature is secretly a way for Sony to test technology for its next handheld console, the PS6. Hardware expert Moore’s Law Is Dead has recently supported this idea again.
In a new video, he claims to have seen fresh developer documentation which confirms his hypothesis.
He demonstrated how the console’s processors work in Power Saver mode with a specific example, carefully avoiding any legal issues.
According to MLID, Sony’s new device seems to match the specifications that were previously leaked online. It appears that the Power Saver mode not only conserves battery life, but also subtly adjusts performance to align with their next mobile device.
This story is based on several unconfirmed reports, which makes it hard to be certain it’s accurate. While we have confidence in our sources at MLID, we haven’t been able to verify the technical details or the documentation that’s been shared. Please keep that in mind as you read.
MLID then shared an email claiming to be from a Sony developer, detailing a new Sony project called PlayGo as additional evidence.
This technology is similar to Microsoft’s Smart Delivery system. It works by automatically providing players with the best graphics and files for their specific console. For instance, if you’re playing on the more powerful PS5 Pro, you’ll get higher-quality visuals than someone playing on the standard PS5.
Interestingly, the system also works with the PS5’s Power Saver mode, letting developers adjust game assets accordingly. However, MLID believes this feature isn’t about saving power at all, and is actually a way for the company to prepare for its upcoming handheld device.
It all makes sense, and as we said earlier, it’s unlikely anyone is using Power Saver mode to genuinely save electricity. Considering how much effort Sony is putting into this, we believe there’s a hidden reason behind it.
This video relies on a lot of speculation and links together various unconfirmed reports, so it’s important to remember that when watching.
We’re pretty confident a portable gaming device that connects to the PlayStation 6 is happening. Now we’re just waiting for Sony to officially announce it, and most importantly, tell us how much it will cost.
