As artificial intelligence remains a major topic of discussion in gaming, Nexon – the company that owns ARC Raiders developer Embark Studio – has shared its perspective. During a recent investor update, Nexon CEO Junghun Lee and Embark Studio head Patrick Söderlund discussed how the company is incorporating generative AI into its game development process.
According to Söderlund, generative AI creates a new hurdle for game developers. He believes that while many are experimenting with AI tools, the companies that truly grasp the implications of this technology will ultimately succeed in leveraging it.
According to Söderlund, all companies create plans, but many of them fail. Often, they invest heavily in tools without properly understanding the problem they’re trying to solve, rendering those tools ineffective. While AI development might feel like a competitive rush, the companies that ultimately succeed won’t be those who jump in first, but those with a true understanding of the core challenges. He compares it to game development and auto repair: everyone has access to the same tools, but success depends on having the necessary expertise and experience. Nexon, he believes, excels in this area.
Lee explained that Nexon’s use of generative AI isn’t about replacing game developers’ creative roles. Instead, it’s designed to help them be more creative by providing valuable background information. This information comes from a long-term data collection project at Nexon called the Mono Lake Initiative.
According to one speaker, Mono Lake provides a central source of knowledge that informs all aspects of their work – from developers and live operations teams to product strategy – drawing on decades of collected data. They argue that AI, without this contextual understanding, simply produces faster, but ultimately generic results. Tools lacking knowledge of past designs, player habits, and innovation risk leading to games that all feel similar. This isn’t a way to stand out from the competition; it just creates a lot of meaningless content.
Lee explained that the release of ARC Raiders could serve as a way to change how people think about AI technology. He believes it will allow developers and teams managing ongoing game services to focus more on creative ideas and less on the tedious work of writing code, ultimately leading to more innovation.
He explained that this technology transforms how people work, affecting the tools they use, their speed, and their overall accomplishments. However, the actual creative content within our games still comes from our developers. Our approach doesn’t replace creativity; it empowers developers by providing them with valuable context. Now, our most talented team members can focus more on making creative choices, informed by data from billions of player decisions – a level of insight very few companies possess.
Nexon’s most popular game lately is ARC Raiders, known for using AI to create some of the voice acting when it launched on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. However, the company has started removing some of this AI-generated content. The game recently received a new update called Flashpoint, which is a PvPvE extraction shooter.
