Ryan Coogler, the director behind films like Creed, Black Panther, and Sinners, is now a leading filmmaker of his generation. In addition to continuing his work in movies—including developing Black Panther 3 at Marvel Studios—he’s expanding into television. Following his role as executive producer on the Eyes of Wakanda miniseries, he’s currently rebooting The X-Files with Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel set to star. And he doesn’t plan on stopping there, as he’s also taking on another revival of a popular show from the 1990s.
Ryan Coogler’s production company, Proximity Media, is helping to develop an Animorphs TV series for Disney+, according to Variety. Bayan Wolcott will write and executive produce the show, which is based on the popular Scholastic book series that ran from 1996 to 2001. Animorphs was previously a TV series on Nickelodeon.
Animorphs Could Be a Big Sci-Fi Hit for Disney+

According to Variety, the upcoming Animorphs series will center around a group of teenagers who discover a secret danger hidden in their normal lives, all while dealing with the typical challenges of high school – relationships, curfews, and everything else. This storyline should sound familiar to fans of the original books, which followed teens trying to save Earth from an alien race called the Yeerks. The teens gained the ability to transform into any animal they touched after meeting an alien from the planet Andalite – a power that gives the series its name. It’s very likely the synopsis is referring to the Yeerks when it mentions a ‘hidden threat’.
The announcement of a new Animorphs series comes at a key moment for Disney+. When Disney+ first launched in 2019, it focused heavily on Marvel and Star Wars shows, which ended up overshadowing those well-known franchises. Now, Marvel is planning to create fewer shows, and Lucasfilm seems to be prioritizing movies again. While the big push for streaming content may be slowing down, Disney+ still needs new series to gain and keep subscribers. Although Marvel and Lucasfilm will continue making streaming projects, Animorphs could fill a gap and offer Disney+ a fresh, exciting science fiction show if those brands scale back their output.
With 54 books in the original series, there’s a lot of source material for a potential TV adaptation of Animorphs. If the show does well, it could become Disney+’s next big fantasy hit like Percy Jackson and the Olympians – a long-running series based on a popular book franchise. Animorphs should attract a similar audience, as it also combines an exciting premise with relatable young adult themes. It sounds like the show will focus just as much on the characters’ personal stories as it does on the science fiction elements, which could make for a really engaging adaptation.
The Animorphs series is still in the very early stages of development, meaning a lot still needs to happen before it’s officially confirmed. However, given the talented people involved and how well-known the original books are, it’s likely the show will move forward. A big reason to be hopeful is Michael Coogler’s involvement. Fresh off his Oscar win for Sinners, he’s proven he can bring a fresh perspective to familiar stories, and he probably has a unique vision for Animorphs that will be exciting to see.
