With many games now released on multiple platforms, Sony often highlights features specifically for the PlayStation 5 in trailers created by other game companies.
This section will showcase what makes the PlayStation version unique and special.
This is especially true for Starfield, considering it used to be available only on Xbox. And to give Bethesda credit, they’re fully utilizing all the benefits that PlayStation offers.
The trailer shows some questionable features – like quickly accessing menus with the touchpad – but the game’s potential really shines if the controller’s vibrations and adaptive triggers are done well, as they could make the fighting feel much more impactful.
Here’s the key information from the press release:
- Adaptive Triggers
- Feel the difference from shot to shot. Adaptive triggers add physical resistance and feedback to the L2 and R2 buttons, giving different types of weapons (both ground and starship) their own unique feel.
- Light Bar
- The DualSense lightbar keeps pace with the action. It shifts color to match your health on the ground or your starship’s status in space, pulsing red when you’re in imminent danger and returning to white as you recover.
- Touchpad
- Quick presses and swipes on the touchpad make it easier to stay in the flow while exploring. Switch POVs by pressing the left side of the touchpad; open the map with the right side; press and hold the right side to activate your hand scanner; and swipe in different directions to access key menus like Inventory, Missions, and Skills.
- Controller Speaker
- Audio logs and ship intercom chatter plays directly through the DualSense controller speaker, pulling you deeper into life among the stars.
The biggest improvement is that the game will launch with Performance Mode enabled, allowing for smoother gameplay. The original Xbox release was limited to 30 frames per second and required an update to unlock a faster frame rate, but this version will have it right from the start.
Although the trailer doesn’t say so, Starfield will also work on the PS5 Pro, offering the highest quality graphics and smoothest gameplay. For most players without a powerful gaming PC, the PS5 Pro will likely be the best way to experience the game.
The press release reveals a little more about your options:
- Pro Visual Mode
- Delivers a 4K final rendering output targeting 30fps for maximum visual fidelity.
- Pro Performance Mode
- Targets 60fps for a faster, more fluid experience. Both modes are powered by PSSR upscaling technology.
While it’s too early to know how successful the sci-fi RPG will be on PlayStation, pre-order numbers are currently very strong, which is a great sign.
