Marvel Comics is introducing a new Iron Man armor, which highlights a challenge the Marvel Cinematic Universe has consistently faced. Over the years, Iron Man has created countless suits – from his first, makeshift armor to incredibly advanced designs built for battling giants, exploring space, and diving into the deepest oceans. He’s famously spent more on his armor than most heroes spend on anything throughout their careers. But this latest armor isn’t about financial resources; it’s something different.
To mark the 50th anniversary of its What If? series, Marvel is releasing a set of special variant covers. According to Bleeding Cool, a new What If? issue focusing on Iron Man will be released on May 26th. This issue, Iron Man #5, explores a scenario where Iron Man’s Extremis technology was actually a symbiote. This isn’t the first time Marvel has explored this particular ‘What If?’ story.
What to Know About Iron Man’s Symbiote Extremis Armor
The cover art for the What If? comic, created by Geoff Shaw, depicts Iron Man merging with an alien symbiote while his Extremis armor powers up. The story promises to explore the challenges Tony Stark faces when sharing control of his armor with an alien being, instead of being fully in command. Despite being a compelling concept, this particular ‘What If?’ scenario has been explored in other stories before.
During the King in Black storyline, when Earth was attacked by Knull, Iron Man combined a symbiote with his technology. He used his Extremis virus to alter the genetic code of a symbiote dragon and integrated it into his Model 70 armor, creating the Extrembiote suit. This allowed him to free heroes and villains from Knull’s control and even command a symbiote Celestial. Although Carnage later stole the armor and used it against him, it was remarkable to see Iron Man wielding the power of the symbiote.
It’s important to remember this storyline couldn’t have happened within the main Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sony owned the rights to characters like Venom and Knull, preventing their use in MCU films. By the time Marvel and Sony reached a deal to potentially share Spider-Man characters, Iron Man was already gone. While the What If…? series on Disney+ could have explored this idea, that show has concluded, so it won’t be happening on screen. It’s disappointing, but thankfully Marvel Comics is at least giving fans a glimpse of what it might have looked like.
