Tubi Just Added A Jurassic Park Star’s Forgotten Cult Sci-Fi (& You Need to See it For One Wild Scene)

Though Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum are well-known from Jurassic Park, one of the film’s younger actors later starred in a popular, but lesser-known, sci-fi movie now available on Tubi. The Jurassic Park and Jurassic World films are full of famous actors, but the original 1993 Jurassic Park stands out. Alongside leads Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Richard Attenborough, and Jeff Goldblum, the movie features strong supporting performances from actors like Wayne Knight, BD Wong, and a young Samuel L. Jackson.

While the young actors in Jurassic Park weren’t very well-known at the time, Joseph Mazzello, who played Tim, later starred in a little-seen but beloved film called Star Kid. It’s a strange and fun superhero movie about a seventh-grader named Spencer who finds a robotic suit powered by artificial intelligence. The suit gives him superpowers, but Spencer quickly discovers he’s trapped inside, and he must also protect it from bug-like aliens who want to conquer Earth.

The classic 90s family film, Star Kid, will be available to stream on Tubi starting April 1st, completely free. Though it wasn’t a blockbuster when it first came out, this surprisingly funny sci-fi comedy is still a fun watch. The movie begins like many kids’ films – with Spencer facing school bullies, grieving his mother, and having a crush. But things quickly get exciting when he discovers a special cybersuit.

One clever decision in Star Kid is setting the entire story over a single night. This allows the film to combine the typical adventures of kids’ movies with the fast-paced, chaotic humor seen in films like Weird Science, Adventures in Babysitting, and License to Drive. This approach lets Star Kid be sillier and more outlandish than many sincere kids’ films from the 1990s, and this is especially clear in its funniest scene. After Spencer gets stuck in the suit, he tries to eat fast food, only to realize the suit has no mouth and won’t let him enjoy his meal without assistance.

Star Kid Answered An Absurd Supersuit Question All Other Superhero Movies Avoided

Rather than simply allowing him to eat as usual, Star Kid‘s futuristic suit breaks down Spencer’s burger into a paste, removing anything it considers unnecessary nutrients. It then gives him a compressed ball of this mush to eat. When Spencer realizes, with horror, that “I’m eating a cybersuit turd,” the audience will quickly understand if the movie’s quirky, ’90s-style humor is for them.

Even if you’re not a fan of the movie’s goofy humor, Star Kid is a genuinely enjoyable and quick-moving kids’ adventure with some clever ideas. While it’s not perfect – like when Spencer teams up with his old bully instead of just winning the fight – it’s still worth watching for a dose of ’90s fun, especially for that one unforgettable (and slightly disgusting) joke. The ending is surprisingly touching, too.
