Fans are eagerly anticipating The Mummy 4, even though it won’t be released until 2028. It’s been almost 20 years since the last Mummy movie, Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, came out in 2008, and people are thrilled at the prospect of Brendan Fraser returning as Rick O’Connell. However, the sequel’s long development is now causing problems for a different horror film scheduled to be released this month.
The new movie The Mummy, from Lee Cronin and Blumhouse, arrives in theaters on April 17th. Because this reboot shares a title with the beloved 1999 film starring Brendan Fraser—which has recently been in the news again—Blumhouse is taking a unique step to avoid confusion. They’re posting daily reminders on X (formerly Twitter) clarifying that Fraser isn’t involved in the new movie. These posts, stating “BRENDAN FRASER IS NOT IN LEE CRONIN’S THE MUMMY,” began on April 2nd.

Lee Cronin’s The Mummy Is Very Different From Brendan Fraser’s Film (But Will Still Struggle Against It)

It’s a bit funny that Blumhouse has to clarify their new The Mummy isn’t the one starring Brendan Fraser, but it shows how difficult it will be for the film to gain traction. This new The Mummy, directed by Lee Cronin, will be quite different, featuring Jack Reynor, Laia Costa, and May Calamawy in a story about a journalist whose daughter mysteriously returns after disappearing in the desert eight years prior. Details are still scarce about The Mummy 4, directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, but the Mummy franchise clearly has a dedicated and enthusiastic fanbase. The 1999 film remains a beloved classic, and most people immediately think of Fraser whenever “The Mummy” is mentioned.
The mix-up with Brendan Fraser could actually help Blumhouse’s new Mummy film. Despite constant reminders that Fraser isn’t involved, some fans might still mistakenly go to see it, introducing them to Lee Cronin’s take on the classic monster. While this Mummy is a horror reboot and quite different from the franchise Fraser starred in, it looks promising. It’s a very different concept than previous Mummy movies, leaning into terrifying body horror. Those who accidentally attend expecting the 1999 film might find it’s not what they anticipated, but they might still enjoy it.
While fans await the next installment, Lee Cronin’s The Mummy arrives in cinemas on April 17th. A fourth Mummy film isn’t anticipated until 2028, meaning viewers will have to wait several years to see Brendan Fraser reprise his role in the series.
