Making movies is expensive, and recent blockbusters—several of which have earned over a billion dollars—have seen budgets skyrocket. Films like Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Jurassic World Dominion, and Fast X are prime examples of big-budget productions. Another costly film is the recent finale to a popular action series that’s been running for thirty years, and it’s now available to stream on Prime Video.
The latest installment of the Tom Cruise action series, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, recently became available on Prime Video. This eighth and final film in the franchise, which began in 1986, cost between $300 and $400 million to make – putting it among the most expensive movies ever created. The story follows Ethan Hunt and his team as they urgently try to find a sunken submarine and stop a dangerous artificial intelligence from causing worldwide disaster.
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning Is a Near-Perfect Final Movie for Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt
Despite not earning enough to fully recoup its significant production costs, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning still achieved major success. While the film’s worldwide gross of $598 million was considered a box office disappointment, it marked the biggest opening weekend ever for the Mission: Impossible franchise, earning $204 million globally and $64 million domestically. It also broke records for IMAX openings with $15.3 million. Critically and with audiences, the film was a hit, receiving both a “Certified Fresh” and “Verified Hot” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, boasting an 80% score from critics and an impressive 88% audience approval rating.
This movie is a fantastic way to end the series and a perfect conclusion to Ethan Hunt’s story. It’s a thrilling celebration of the franchise’s 30-year history, referencing past events and characters to create a sense of nostalgia and emotional depth. As fans would expect, ‘Final Reckoning’ is packed with incredible, real-life stunts – like a breathtaking airplane sequence and a tense underwater scene – that highlight Hunt’s skills and build on everything he’s done before. Ultimately, the film delivers a moving finale that feels like a satisfying end to Hunt’s journey.
What’s New on Prime Video?
Prime Video has added a bunch of new movies to stream, and it’s not just Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. Starting April 1st, Amazon’s streaming service included titles like Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant, Killer Klowns from Outer Space, The Terminator, and Titanic, and they plan to add even more throughout the month.
