Andy Serkis recently shared exciting news about the new Lord of the Rings project, The Hunt for Gollum, giving fans a glimpse of what’s to come.
I’m so excited to hear Andy Serkis is coming back as Gollum and directing! But I was a little sad to find out Viggo Mortensen won’t be playing Aragorn this time around – they’re going to have to find a new actor for that role.
Responding to rumors about the cast, Andy Serkis recently told Screen Rant that while he’s aware of all the speculation, they are indeed looking for a new actor to take on the role and are making progress in the search.
The new story, ‘The Hunt for Gollum,’ takes place between the endings of ‘The Hobbit’ and the beginning of ‘The Lord of the Rings.’ It will reveal a story that hasn’t been told before, according to Andy Serkis.
The actor has been careful not to reveal much about the movie, explaining that it’s set between the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. He confirmed the film, titled The Hunt for Gollum, will follow a literal chase for the character, but also explore his inner struggles and psychological journey.
We’re almost ready to begin, and we’re really excited about it. It’s going to be quite an experience.

Andy Serkis mentioned that the team behind the original Lord of the Rings films is working together again on ‘The Hunt for Gollum’.
It’s been a challenging balancing act for everyone involved,” he said. “Bringing back the original Lord of the Rings team was a big part of it. We really wanted to stay true to the established stories, the world-building, and the style of Peter Jackson’s original films, including both the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies.
Serkis explained that the new film will definitely feel like a true Middle-earth experience. However, it will also delve much deeper into the mind of Gollum, one of Tolkien’s most complicated characters. It’s a unique blend of styles, and a delicate balance to strike. Many of the filmmaking techniques they’re using are similar to those from the original trilogy.
We’re aiming to create a wonderful film that blends a fresh story with a personal, emotional core, all set within the beloved world of Middle-earth. It’s important to remember that many viewers will be experiencing Middle-earth on screen for the very first time, which has made this project a really special undertaking.

The only confirmed news about the new movie so far is that Kate Winslet will star as the main female character. Details about her specific role are still being kept secret.
There’s also talk that Elijah Wood might reprise his role as Frodo Baggins and Ian McKellen could return as Gandalf in the film.
While neither actor has officially said so, Wood recently mentioned to The Sunday Times that he wouldn’t want anyone else to play Frodo as long as he’s still alive and able to act.
Talking about new movies set in a beloved world like Middle-earth is always a bit stressful. Fans are naturally protective and want to make sure the spirit of the original stays intact. But this new story is exciting and enjoyable, and it really feels like the original creative team is reunited.
The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is coming to cinemas in December 2027.
