The new IDW Publishing comic, Star Trek: Red Shirts — Ghost of the 21st Century #1, begins with a startling discovery. Deubert and his colleague, Taval, soon realize someone within Starfleet Security is betraying the Federation, and their lives will never be the same after learning the truth about the purpose of red shirts.

What To Know About Star Trek: Red Shirts — Ghost of the 21st Century

Star Trek: Red Shirts — Ghost of the 21st Century is the first spin-off series based on the original Star Trek. The series focuses on the often short-lived “Red Shirts” – characters frequently used as expendable crew members – and is known for its intense and graphic violence, as described by IDW’s Star Trek Story Editor Heather Antos.

Gerry Duggan, the writer of Star Trek: Red Shirts — Ghost of the 21st Century, shared his enthusiasm about working again with Antos and artist Scott Buoncristiano. He previously collaborated with Antos on Deadpool and Buoncristiano on The Dark Room. Duggan playfully warned that this new Red Shirts series will be a memorable and impactful addition to the Star Trek universe.

I was already a month into rewatching Star Trek when I got the chance to work on Red Shirts,” Buoncristiano explained. “It’s one thing to enjoy the Star Trek universe as a fan, but it’s completely different to actually create art within it. Working with Gerry Duggan and the team at IDW has been really fun, and I’m excited for readers to see what we’ve done with those unfortunate Red Shirts!”

IDW is continuing its popular line of Star Trek comics with a new Red Shirts series. A recent variant cover for Star Wars: The Last Starship #8, illustrated by Hernan Gonzalez and Lee Loughridge, hints at a significant development in the fight against the Borg Queen Agnes Jurati.

Star Trek: Red Shirts — Ghost of the 21st Century #1 from IDW Publishing goes on sale on July 22.
