I’ve been a Harry Potter fan for years, and there’s this one moment that’s always stuck with me. It’s from Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix when Harry has this really unsettling dream about Mr. Weasley being attacked. Harry and the Weasleys go to Dumbledore, and it’s during that conversation that things get…weird. Dumbledore starts looking at some of his strange objects, and he picks up this delicate silver instrument. He blows smoke on it, and this snake head grows out of it, opens its mouth, and then splits into two snakes! And then, Dumbledore just calmly says, ‘Naturally, naturally. But in essence divided?’ It’s always baffled me – and so many other fans, too – what he meant by that!
The book simply states Harry Potter didn’t understand Dumbledore, then quickly moves on, leaving readers confused. This moment has bothered fans for years, and a recent discussion on Reddit has reignited the debate about its meaning. Throughout the Harry Potter series, the author often leaves certain things unexplained. However, J.K. Rowling has actually already revealed the answer to this mystery, and explained why she chose not to directly state it in the books.
What Does Dumbledore’s “In Essence Divided” Actually Mean?

For a long time, Harry had been experiencing things he shouldn’t have, and his ability to speak Parseltongue was another indication of something unusual. Dumbledore began to understand the connection between Harry and Lord Voldemort during this moment. When Voldemort attacked Harry’s parents, Harry’s mother sacrificed herself to save him, temporarily defeating the dark wizard. This act created a lasting connection between them, but more significantly, it unintentionally made Harry a horcrux – a piece of Voldemort’s soul was transferred into him.
J.K. Rowling explained that in this scene, Dumbledore realized, through his visions, that Voldemort had split his soul. He was confirming his long-held theory – a theory, as the snake hinted, that was correct. Because the story is told from Harry’s perspective, and Harry didn’t understand what Dumbledore meant, this wasn’t explained to the reader. Dumbledore had suspected Voldemort was capable of this since Chamber of Secrets, but this moment was when he finally connected the pieces.
Dumbledore had several reasons for not telling Harry about the horcrux. Primarily, he needed to protect the secret from Voldemort, as they shared a mental connection. Additionally, Dumbledore was prepared to sacrifice Harry if necessary for the greater good, and he couldn’t reveal any information until he had a plan to finally defeat Voldemort. Knowing Harry was a horcrux created a difficult challenge for Dumbledore, and he understood he needed to find a way to destroy it to defeat Voldemort.
