Thousands of movies come out each year, so many great films often get overlooked. Even movie buffs who follow Hollywood closely can miss some interesting titles. Luckily, streaming services make it easier to discover these hidden gems, giving films a second chance after their initial release. Just look at the current Netflix charts – you’ll often find lesser-known, critically acclaimed movies gaining popularity.
From March 23rd to 29th, the movie 40 Acres reached number 8 on Netflix worldwide. It garnered 3.1 million views and a total of 5.8 million hours of watch time. This marked the first week the film appeared in Netflix’s top 10.
40 Acres Is an Intense Sci-Fi Thriller You Probably Haven’t Heard Of

I just finished watching 40 Acres, and it’s a gripping story about the Freeman family, who’ve held onto their Canadian farm for generations – all the way back to after the American Civil War! The setting is a bleak, post-apocalyptic future where everyone is struggling with hunger, and the Freemans are desperately trying to defend their land from a dangerous militia. Danielle Deadwyler, who you might recognize from the new X-Files, is fantastic as Hailey Freeman, a truly determined woman fighting tooth and nail to protect her family and home. Critics seem to agree – it’s a really solid film, currently boasting an impressive 89% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Even dedicated science fiction fans might not be familiar with the movie 40 Acres. It premiered internationally at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival, but didn’t have its first U.S. showing until the South by Southwest Festival in March 2025. After playing at several other film festivals, 40 Acres had a limited release in U.S. theaters in July 2025, opening on the same day as Jurassic World Rebirth. It only played in 340 theaters and earned $776,595 worldwide before becoming available digitally. Now, it’s finally reaching a wider audience on streaming, and it’s clear why it’s becoming popular with Netflix viewers.
Post-apocalyptic movies consistently attract audiences, often offering thought-provoking looks at what it means to be human alongside exciting action. The film 40 Acres fits right into this tradition. Director R.T. Thorne delivers intense and gripping action sequences, blending thrilling genre elements with meaningful themes and a strong narrative. While 40 Acres is Thorne’s debut feature – meaning some parts are stronger than others – it’s a noteworthy entry in the genre, driven by its ambitious ideas and a fantastic performance by Deadwyler. The film offers a new take on familiar territory, establishing Thorne as a promising director to keep an eye on.
With the success of films like Project Hail Mary and shows like War Machine, it’s easy to overlook smaller releases. However, 40 Acres is worth checking out. Made with a modest $8 million budget, this film delivers a surprisingly immersive experience thanks to its strong production design and compelling story. While it might not be a top sci-fi film of recent years, 40 Acres is a tense and enjoyable watch that deserves attention.
