Every Godzilla & Kong Tie-In That’s Official MonsterVerse Canon

The MonsterVerse now includes five movies – Godzilla, Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Godzilla vs. Kong, and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire – as well as three seasons of TV shows: the animated series Skull Island and both seasons of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. Importantly, the MonsterVerse isn’t just about movies and TV; comics and video games are also considered official parts of the story. So far, there are 11 of these additional stories, and that number will likely grow with the release of Godzilla x Kong: Supernova. The upcoming graphic novel, Monarch: The Lost Adventures, scheduled to be released in June, is also expected to be considered official canon.

Let’s quickly mention a few MonsterVerse stories that aren’t considered official parts of the main storyline. This includes the comic book Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong, and the video games Godzilla: Crisis Defense, Godzilla: Strike Zone, Kong VR: Destination Skull Island, and Godzilla: Smash3.

11) Godzilla: Awakening

The MonsterVerse quickly became a major multimedia franchise, but it had a few inconsistencies early on. This graphic novel, which tells the story of Dr. Serizawa’s father discovering Godzilla and a new monster called Shinomura, doesn’t entirely line up with the 2014 film – some events match, but others don’t. As a result, it’s considered ‘soft canon’ – meaning it’s not fully part of the official storyline. More recently, the Monarch: Legacy of Monsters series has further complicated things, and now many fans don’t consider this graphic novel canon at all. It does have a fantastic cover, though.

10) Skull Island: The Birth of Kong

Skull Island: The Birth of Kong is a four-part comic book series that expands on the story of Kong: Skull Island. Most of the action happens in 1995, years after the movie, and centers around Aaron Brooks, the son of Houston Brooks (a character played by Corey Hawkins in Skull Island and Joe Morton in Godzilla: King of the Monsters). Like his father, Aaron journeys to Skull Island, where he and his team from Monarch uncover the history of Kong with the help of the Iwi tribe.

9) Godzilla: Aftershock

Godzilla: Aftershock is a 112-page graphic novel that bridges the stories of Godzilla and Godzilla: King of the Monsters. It reveals that a massive MUTO, known as MUTO Prime, laid eggs in Dagon, a relative of Godzilla. These eggs hatched into the two MUTOs featured in the 2014 film. The story follows two battles between Godzilla and the mother MUTO, with Godzilla initially losing but ultimately winning, though he does lose some of his dorsal plates in the fight.

8) Kingdom Kong

Kingdom Kong is a story that connects to both the epic battle between Godzilla and Kong, and the origins of Kong on Skull Island. The film centers around Kong defending his home from Camazotz, a massive bat-like creature. Meanwhile, a team of military pilots on Skull Island are vying for the dangerous assignment of venturing into the Hollow Earth, but their plans are disrupted by Camazotz, forcing Kong to reclaim his position as the island’s ruler.

7) Godzilla Dominion

In Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Godzilla’s home is a hidden temple at the bottom of the ocean. When he’s severely injured fighting King Ghidorah, he retreats there to heal, and Dr. Serizawa makes a heroic sacrifice with a nuclear bomb to help him recover. Unfortunately, the temple is destroyed in the process. The graphic novel prequel to Godzilla vs. Kong, titled Godzilla Dominion (similar to Kingdom Kong), depicts Godzilla searching for a new base of operations. During his search, he encounters and battles other monsters, including Scylla, the octopus-like Na Kika, the plant-based Amhuluk, and Tiamat.

6) Kong and Me

Published in 2001, Kong and Me is the only MonsterVerse story written for younger readers. It highlights the heartwarming relationship between Kong and Jia, who also appear in Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. The story is told from Jia’s point of view, showing simple, sweet moments like building sandcastles with Kong, watching clouds, and playing in a little pool of water he creates for her. While it doesn’t focus on action, it does offer a look at other creatures living on Skull Island, such as the Leafwings, Mother Longlegs, and the Spore Mantis.

5) Godzilla x Kong: Titan Chasers

As a huge monster movie fan, I’m really excited about Godzilla x Kong: Titan Chasers! It’s a free-to-play strategy game coming out in 2025 where you basically run an outpost, collect resources, and build up an army to fight all the Titans. You can also send out teams – either human ‘Titan Chasers’ or the Titans themselves – on expeditions through 12 different campaigns. And get this – they’ve included so many monsters from the films! We’re talking Skullcrawlers from Kong: Skull Island, the Warbat from Godzilla vs. Kong, Shimo and the Skar King from Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, and naturally, Godzilla and King Kong themselves. It sounds like a dream come true for any monster movie buff!

4) Godzilla x Kong: The Hunted

Published just before the film Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Godzilla x Kong: The Hunted is a graphic novel that tells a story leading up to the movie. It centers around Raymond Martin, a hunter determined to defeat Kong. To ensure Godzilla doesn’t interfere, Martin cleverly creates a situation where Godzilla has a different Titan to battle.

3) Kong: Survivor Instinct

Kong: Survivor Instinct is a 2025 platformer game where you play as David Martin, searching for his daughter in a city devastated by Titans. While some events in the game aren’t mentioned in other MonsterVerse projects, it’s generally accepted as an official part of the story.

Speaking of games featuring Kong, there’s a tabletop roleplaying game from 2023 called Kong: Skull Island Cinematic Adventure that loosely fits into the established story. It’s a campaign created for the Everyday Heroes system, set shortly after the 2014 Godzilla movie.

2) MonsterVerse Declassified

The comic series MonsterVerse Declassified explores the backstories of Titans – colossal creatures from the Godzilla x Kong universe – both before and during the events of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. The series focuses on four Titans fans will recognize from the films: Doug, a lizard from the Hollow Earth (who previously stole food from Kong); Behemoth, a woolly mammoth-like Titan seen in Godzilla: King of the Monsters; Tiamat, who appeared in The New Empire; and Abaddon, a spider-like Titan also from King of the Monsters.

1) Return to Skull Island

From July to October 2025, Return to Skull Island was a four-part comic book series continuing the story of the Netflix show Skull Island. It follows a group of people stranded on Kong’s island who must survive against the dangerous creatures—and Kong himself. The follow-up series, Escape from Skull Island, which began in late January of this year, is also considered official canon.
