Platinum Trophy #19: Superhot: Mind Control Delete

I also reviewed Superhot: Mind Control Delete for Push Square. It seems I’m developing a knack for earning platinum trophies in certain types of games, don’t you think?
It’s understandable if you’ve forgotten about this game. While the original Superhot received a lot of hype for its unique style, its follow-up, Mind Control Delete, didn’t make much of a splash when it was released.
Maybe people had simply grown tired of the original game by then? I can’t remember exactly, but the sequel is definitely larger and, in many respects, an improvement over the first one.
The core gameplay remains the same – defeating crystalline red enemies and slowing time when stationary. However, this version offers a much larger experience with a more engaging structure, moving away from a straightforward path and incorporating elements of roguelike games.
Even now, the heart of what makes these games great is still the best part. The way you have to quickly adapt and use whatever weapons you find in each level to deal with incoming dangers is really special – it’s a unique kind of fun you don’t often find in other games.
I just love how straightforward this is, but it’s done so well. The rules are super easy to learn, which is great, but it’s not a walk in the park! There’s always something to do, and you’re never completely stuck – there are always ways to turn things around.
The game’s trophies are mostly earned simply by playing through the story. There’s one for finding a hidden monitor, but it’s not too difficult to get once you know the levels well.
There is one Trophy that’s a bit more bothersome. Well, it’s just a time sink, really.
Okay, so there’s this part of the game where you have to start a timer and just… wait. It’s a two and a half hour timer – seriously! You have to let it run in real time if you want to unlock the Trophy and progress. It’s a bit of a grind, honestly, but necessary!
For most, it’s two and a half hours, at least.
For me, who played it before any post-launch or even day one patches, that timer was eight hours.
Eight!
I had to leave the game running for that whole duration.
I was really confused, but since the game hadn’t been released yet, I couldn’t find any information about what was happening. I wasn’t sure if I could pause, exit to the main menu, or use rest mode, so I just had to wait and see what would happen.
I was trying to adjust how long my PS4 waits before going into rest mode. I was playing Superhot and wondered if quitting the game would mess up the in-game timer, so I didn’t want to risk testing it out. I just wanted to change the console’s rest mode settings without potentially ruining my Superhot run!
I ended up leaving the game on for eight straight hours, and had to repeatedly wake up my PlayStation controller to prevent the console from turning off. It felt a little crazy!
The initial eight-hour time limit was included in the game, but it was quickly changed to a more manageable two and a half hours – the length most players will encounter.
When you’re testing a game before it’s released, you’re on your own. Since you’re among the very first players outside the development team, there’s no existing help or guidance to rely on.
I can’t think of anything more ridiculous I’ve done in a game just to earn a trophy than sitting and watching a progress bar for eight hours.
It was memorable, at least. And again, the game itself is great fun.
Cheers, Superhot: Mind Control Delete.
