The creators of Stranger Things are facing backlash from fans over their new animated series, Stranger Things: Tales from ’85. While the animation was intended to keep the popular show – whose final season received mixed reactions – relevant, it seems many fans are now saying they won’t even watch it.
Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 takes place between seasons two and three of Stranger Things. The story follows Eleven and her friends – including some characters we haven’t seen before – as they investigate a strange, supernatural mystery in Hawkins. According to showrunner Eric Robles, this series is a rare chance to revisit these beloved characters and spend more time with them. However, the show notably excludes most of the Byers family, with Will being the only exception.
Is There Stranger Things Without the Byers Family?
According to online discussions, the answer is a definite “no.” This makes sense, given how crucial Joyce and Jonathan are to the story – the first two seasons largely focused on their family. Plus, Jonathan and Nancy just started dating during that time, and both Nancy and Steve Harrington are confirmed to have major roles in the upcoming Tales from ’85. One fan pointed out that it doesn’t make sense to downplay Jonathan’s role as Will’s brother or Joyce’s importance as the show’s most central parent.
Many fans feel the show’s quality has declined, with one stating the writers seem disconnected from what made the earlier seasons great. They point to the Byers family as a key element of the show’s original grounded and captivating feel, and believe their storyline was underdeveloped in later seasons, especially the final one. This disappointment stems from the significant changes introduced in seasons 4 and 5, which resulted in a finale that prioritized style over substance and disregarded established storylines and character development. Ultimately, viewers feel the show has strayed too far from its original appeal, despite Netflix’s attempts to leverage nostalgia for its initial success.
