Sega has hinted at bringing back a classic series in 2026, but it’s unknown if this will involve a completely new game. Sega has a long history in gaming and owns many beloved, older franchises. While some, like Sonic the Hedgehog, remain popular, others have become less well-known over the years, appearing only occasionally or not at all. Fortunately, the series Sega is referencing isn’t forgotten, though it hasn’t been very active recently. With the series celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2026, that year could see a significant revival.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Sakura Wars series. Sega recently unveiled a special logo to commemorate the milestone, signaling they have plans for a celebration. They’ve confirmed announcements are coming soon regarding anniversary merchandise and events. While there’s no word yet about a new game, remaster, remake, or even a re-release of older titles, many fans suspect a game announcement is likely, given the extent of the planned celebration.
Sega Series Dates Back to 1996
The original Sakura Wars game was first released in 1996, developed by Red Company and published by Sega. Red Company is no longer part of the series. Since then, several sequels have followed, including Sakura Wars 2: Thou Shalt Not Die (1998), Sakura Wars 3: Is Paris Burning (2001), Sakura Wars 4: Fall in Love, Maidens (2002), Sakura Wars V: So Long, My Love (2005), and a reboot of the series released in 2019, also titled Sakura Wars.
Fans have been hoping for an updated version of the original game for a while now, and it seems more likely than a completely new installment at this point. With the anniversary coming up, it would be a logical move. However, there haven’t been any announcements about a remaster yet.
I’m really hoping the series comes back, but if it does, it might be smaller scale. The last game in 2019 was only on PlayStation 4, which makes things tricky. But if they ever remake the original, I’m guessing they’d release it on multiple platforms – that would be awesome!
